Did the Canes have a full 60 minute effort?

To make the long story short no, no they did not.

The Carolina Hurricanes were once again off to a slow start. Although they scored the first goal of the game, they struggled vitally in the defensive zone. Unable to clear the puck continuously they let Detroit hang around with turnover after turnover.

Through the first 40 minutes, the Wings’ top line of Anthony Mantha, Dylan Larkin and Tyler Bertuzzi were surging. It seemed as if every time they stepped on the ice they were generating quality scoring chances that, if it wasn’t for the solid play of Petr, could have dramatically shifted the outcome of the game.

On the flip side, the Canes’ top line looked to be completely lost. They were unable to create chances in the offensive zone or finish off tap in goals. On the defensive side of things, they were getting out worked and were on the ice for both goals against. The Hurricanes were lucky to be tied up entering the second intermission and knew they needed to be better in all areas in the third.

Easily their best period of the night, the Hurricanes managed to score three unanswered goals in the third. In what was a complete 180 for the Carolina’s top trio, Sebastian Aho found the back of the net twice and seemed to regain some of his offensive confidence.

Meanwhile, Detroit’s top guys found themselves taking a series of undisciplined penalties, sealing the game for the Canes in the process.
