Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Center. Derek Ryan. 5. 38 Points. player. 109

The Canes put a lot of responsibility to a forward that didn’t have too much of that in the past in Derek Ryan. The 31-year-old center led the way for the third and fourth forward lines for most of the season even though he did produce well for some of the year.

Ryan posted a career high 38 points this season, but also had some struggles on both ends of the ice too. He’s better in the offensive zone, and came close to his first 20 goal season in the NHL. Ryan has only spent two seasons with close to a full body of the work in the league.

His name could carry some value on the trade market, especially if the Canes deal him to a team that needs assistance with center depth immediately, and if they have young players or draft picks to move. Ryan did finish with a rough plus/minus rating at -15.

Ryan’s plus/minus rating landed him among the worst forwards for the Canes this season. He does have some work to do during the off-season before he can land a bigger role with any team. The top end potential for Ryan is hard to figure out, but the fans seem tired of him already.
