Hey Now, Why Aren’t They a Carolina Hurricanes All Star?
With Dougie Hamilton recently being named the sole representative for the Carolina Hurricanes for the All Star game in St. Louis, one can’t help but wonder why was he the only one?
First off, a massive congratulations to Dougie Hamilton on being named an NHL All Star for the first time in his career. He is extremely deserving of this honor. Dougie has had a breakout season At the time of writing, he has recorded 37 points in 41 games and is making a strong case for the Norris Trophy this season.
All that aside the Hurricanes have other players on their roster that have shown themselves to be more than deserving of a trip to St. Louis at the end of January. Could this be a bias against the Hurricanes? Maybe because they are just now on the rise again people aren’t taking them seriously.
The Hurricanes are stacked with talent. But three players in particular stand out in particular. Teuvo Teravainen, Sebastian Aho, and Andrei Svechnikov. These guys, along with Dougie, have been major reasons on why the Hurricanes find themselves with a spot in the top 10 teams in the NHL right now.
Let’s start with our last man in candidate; Turbo.
Teuvo Teravainen
He could very well find himself with a spot in the All Star game. He’s currently up for the “last man in’ spot. And with good reason too. Teuvo has been flying under the radar for a while now. And this season he’s quietly been having an incredible season. Over the 40 games played so far, Teuvo currently sits at having recorded 40 points. That’s even more than Dougie.
Turbo has been an assist machine this season. On the ice he’s able to notice openings for potential scoring opportunities that others may miss. He leads the Hurricanes in assists with 33. Which also ties him for the number three spot in the metropolitan division with Artemi Panarin. Which obviously makes him one of the league leaders.
His 40 point total has him in the top 25 in the NHL in points. That’s multiple spots ahead of any of his teammates. As well ahead of Metropolitan division captain, even though he’s said he isn’t going to go to the All Star game, Alex Ovechkin.
I think what could be the cause of him not having a spot in St. Louis is because he’s not one for flair. Teuvo isn’t concerned with being flashy and putting on a show like other players. He just goes out there and plays. He’s only recorded 7 goals. Prior to the beginning for the season I had him pegged as one of the Hurricanes leading goal scorers. But Teuvo has said he doesn’t really care about scoring.
And with his performance this season, he’s shown that you don’t need to be a goal scorer to be one of the top players in the league.
Now, why hasn’t Aho on his way to his second All Star game?
Sebastian Aho
Sebastian Aho may have gotten off to one of his trademarked slow starts again this season, but he’s seriously heated up over the past couple of months. And since then he’s been one of the top scorers in the league. He’s been named the Hurricanes player of the month for November and December.
Currently Sebastian Aho leads the Hurricanes in goals scored with 23. Which also only one goal behind division leader Ovechkin. And has him sitting at eighth in the NHL. He also leads the Hurricanes in power play goals with 5 as of writing. And is in 5th in total points with 36.
Aho has proven that he is worthy of that contract he received during the off season. As well as another trip to the All star game. He’s poised to break his goal record from last season, 30, sooner rather than later.
I think Sebastian Aho was passed over this season due for a couple reasons. The first being that even though he’s putting pucks in the net, he’s not racking up the assists like other players. As previously mentioned he’s only one goal behind Ovechkin in the division, which is obviously very impressive for such a young player, he is farther behind him when it comes to assists.
Aho only has 13 assists. Which has brought his points total way down. But as the season goes on, I see that number going up as Sebastian continues to find his groove on the ice.
Now why isn’t the owner of “The Svech” on the way to St. Louis?
Andrei Svechnikov
This has me more baffled than the others to be completely honest. The NHL constantly wants to tweet out pictures, videos, and gifs of Svechnikov but when it comes time, do they take the opportunity showcase one of their fastest rising young stars? Nope.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way, Andrei was the first, and still the only person, in NHL history to score a lacrosse style goal in the NHL. Oh, and he did it twice in the span of like a month and a half.

Svechnikov is second on the Hurricanes in points totals with 40. Behind only Turbo. He’s also is tied with Ovechkin in points with 40. And again, Alex isn’t even going to attend the event and yet was named metro captain. And he’s only 19.
I honestly can’t think of a reason why he doesn’t find himself with a spot on the Metro divisions’ all star team. Maybe because of his young age? And they think his best years are still ahead of him. I mean, yeah, but that shouldn’t be a reason why he shouldn’t get recognition for what he’s doing right now.
Turbo could soon find himself with a spot on the Metropolitan divisions’ all star team. There is also talk of a chance of Svechnikov potentially making the team as well since Ovechkin is opting out. But we will have to wait and see.
