This morning the Carolina Hurricanes President and GM, Don Waddell, announced that they have signed Max McCormick to a one-year deal. What can fans expect from the newest forward?

This morning Don Waddell announced the newest signing for the Carolina Hurricanes. Forward Max McCormick, 27 years old, signed a one-year two-way deal. McCormick will make $700,000 at the NHL level with the Hurricanes and $100,00 at the AHL level with the Charlotte Checkers with a $150,000 guarantee.

McCormick was drafted 171st overall by the Ottawa Senators in 2011. Last season, he had 20 points over the course of 45 AHL games split between the Colorado Eagles and Belleville Senators. He also played 14 games with Ottawa and scored one goal.

In a press release about the signing, Waddell had this to say about the newest addition to the Hurricanes, “Max is a hard-nosed forward who has shown a scoring touch and an ability to score at the AHL level.” He added ” This signing adds depth to our forward group.”

Waddell is right too. This signing adds even more depth to a group that already has players like superstar Sebastian Aho, Teuvo Teravainen, and Andrei Svechnikov. Not to mention new additions Ryan Dzingel and Erik Haula. McCormick and Dzingel also already have history together from their time up in Ottawa together. As well as their time together at Ohio State and with the Belleville Senators.

Not only does McCormick add depth to the Hurricanes roster, he will be a valuable asset to the reigning Calder Cup Champions, Charlotte Checkers, as well. Who recently signed forwards Hunter Shinkaruk, Colin Markison, and Cavan Fitzgerald. As well as re-signing defenseman Derek Sheppard.

The Hurricanes are committed to showing everyone that the success of last season was not just a flash in the pan and that they are here to stay. This signing is proof of that. They are building an incredibly deep roster that has the potential to end up being one of the best in the league next season and beyond.

The signing of McCormick is also beneficial for the Hurricanes in the event that restricted free agent, Saku Maenalanen doesn’t return to the team this upcoming season. However that is very unlikely.

With that potential problem taken care of, the only major thing left to worry about is whether or not unrestricted free agent and team captain, Justin Williams, will return or not.  That is something we all will have to wait for as only time will tell what the 37 year old will ultimately decide to do.

Next. Time to re-sign Justin Williams. dark
