Dallas Stars come to town and spoil the party for the Carolina Hurricanes

The Carolina Hurricanes must continue the streak. That’s the message being preached by Coach Bill Peters.  Going into the game against Dallas, the Canes already knew about Boston’s win Saturday afternoon.   Now they had their sights set on Toronto for the last playoff spot.

Ultimately both the scoreboard and the game did not go the Hurricanes’ way.  Toronto would beat the Red Wings 5-4 and while Tampa lost they would lose in overtime and gain a point.  Every team ahead of the Hurricanes tonight would earn points; the Hurricanes would leave PNC empty handed.

The Game

  • The Hurricanes came out a little shaky but the defense looked strong. Carolina first line of Staal, Aho & Lindholm with D-men Slavin & Pesce seemed to have one job tonight.  The First line shadowed the Stars top line of Benn, Seguin & Shore for all first period.  During the second half of the period, Carolina offense comes alive and started to take the play to Dallas.  The first period ended with no score and no highlights.
  • In the second, The Hurricanes came out hot and attacking hard. With the Canes defense playing with maybe too much offensive confidence let Jason Spezza sneak in and score.
  • During the third period, the Hurricanes showed offensive pressure at times but it looked tentative and as the pressure grew so did the tentativeness. Most of Carolina’s play was from the outside.  Once desperation showed its head, the Canes gave up two empty net goals to seal the deal for Dallas.

The End is Near

This was the end that all Caniacs were fearing with a 3-0 loss to the Dallas Stars.  Carolina came into this game with high hopes and a good chance to continue the point streak against a bad team.  All the Dallas Stars were playing for was pride.

Dallas having the worst goalie situation in the league just didn’t pan out for the Hurricanes tonight. Carolina who had the best offense in March started April with the worst.  The Carolina Hurricanes get on a plane for a road trip that amounts to a must win out scenario against top NHL contenders.

In all seriousness barring any major collapses, this loss marks the end of the Canes playoff chances.  It was a valiant effort, and the fans were rewarded with some of the best-played hockey to be seen in a long time in Raleigh.  Ultimately, the Carolina Hurricanes’ recent play is just one more sign that things are on the rise.
