A quiet opening day of free agency ends with two Hurricanes finding new opportunities

As expected, there wasn't a ton going on for the Carolina Hurricanes once free agency began, with no one new joining the team and two AHL studs heading out.

Remember the first day of free agency last year? The opening hours of July 1, 2025, gave us the Logan Stankoven eight-year extension and the K'Andre Miller sign-and-trade. Just like that, the Carolina Hurricanes were off and running. The following day saw them sign Nikolaj Ehlers, bringing together what eventually became a Stanley Cup roster. July 1, 2026, was nothing like that.

The day began with concerns surrounding whether a John Carlson deal would materialize. When the clock struck noon and there was no news of a contract, it was assumed that he'd hit the market, bringing another waiting game of sorts. As time slowly ticked away and new landing spots were being announced for various free agents, the Hurricanes were nowhere to be seen.

At last check, they were still in talks with Carlson and his camp, and there are teams very interested in Alexander Nikishin. Otherwise, it's unclear what direction the Hurricanes will take. There was some interesting news in Winnipeg, with the Jets signing goalie Stuart Skinner. It has only amplified the notion of Connor Hellebuyck being dealt, and the Canes have been in on him for a while.

There have been a few big trades, like former Hurricane Vincent Trocheck leaving the division after the Rangers dealt him to Utah, or Darnell Nurse flying from Edmonton to San Jose. A few of the remaining big-name free agents have also signed, but some of the more exciting stories are still waiting to be resolved. In particular, those involving Hellebuyck and Jason Robertson.

While the day didn't bring us any additions to the roster, it also didn't feature any news regarding several of the team's unrestricted free agents. Frederik Andersen and Mike Reilly remain on the open market for now. However, a few of the Hurricanes' AHL free agents have found new homes, including a former first-rounder.

The first exit of the day saw defenseman Domenick Fensore, who was not given a qualifying offer on Monday, signing a one-year deal with the Colorado Avalanche. Fensore has spent most of his professional career carving out a nice role in the AHL while getting three games with the Canes in two years. The Wolves are pretty set on defense, so this move felt understandable.

A little after 5 pm, the next domino fell when Ryan Suzuki was announced to have signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators. Selected in the first round in 2019, injuries hampered the beginning of Suzuki's professional run, but he proved to be a valuable part of the organization's AHL success. He only played two games in the NHL, so hopefully, Ottawa can give him a bigger role.

With Wednesday being the first day of the offseason, there's so much more to come over the next few days, weeks, and months. Not everything will be decided on the first day, even if that's when the majority of the players will sign. We're still due a few earth-shattering trades and some questionable contracts. We'll see what the Hurricanes have up their sleeves.
