Just as the NHL teams wrap up their training camps this week, the AHL teams will begin there start to the season. The Carolina Hurricanes renewed their agreement with the Chicago Wolves this past spring after both clubs separated the prior season. The Wolves opened up training camp yesterday as the calendar turned to October.
Last season, the Canes struggled to have control of their prospects, being spread across the AHL and ECHL, as well as overseas. The prospects would play for another organization's affiliate and some players even played on two different AHL teams over the span of the season.
The reuniting with the Wolves will benefit the Canes and their players. Antti Raanta was the one NHL player that had to spend time in the AHL and return back to Carolina for parts of the season. This year it is likely that Spencer Martin will be making a trip or two back and forth from Chicago to Raleigh.
As the Canes prepare to play their third preseason game this evening against the Nashville Predators, you can expect for some cuts after tonight that will head straight to Chicago for their training camp.
Bradly Nadeau, Scott Morrow and Felix Unger Sorum may be the big names that end up in Chicago's camp shortly, but for now the camp opened with 14 forward, 6 defensemen and 2 goaltenders.
