The Hometown Remix jerseys have been the worst-kept secret in the league for several months, and we finally got our first official look at them on Monday afternoon. The NHL released the sweaters for all 32 teams, and the Carolina Hurricanes' newest threads put their beloved mascot front and center, with a color we've rarely seen them sport.

Speculation that a new jersey line was coming began back in May, and little was known about what we were about to get. Early mock-ups of the Islanders' and the Panthers' Hometown Remix sweaters accompanied the news. Over the last few months, more and more has leaked about what the Canes' could look like.

The first bit of information we received was that the main color would be grey, something we haven't seen from the Canes much over the last 30 years. The only other jersey in the team's history with a primarily grey base was their 2021-22 Reverse Retros, which harkened back to their Whalers heritage. Fortunately, the league stayed away from giving the Canes another Whalers kit.

Eventually, it was revealed that the beloved "Struttin' Stormy" logo would get the honor of gracing the front of the jerseys. First making an appearance on merchandise during the 2023 Stadium Series, Stormy finally left his mark on the shoulder of the team's new road uniforms last year. Now, he's getting the star treatment he has always deserved.

About two weeks ago, the team released the first official teaser as part of a league-wide campaign. Theirs was a Caesar Cypher, making fans shift the letters to reveal a message. If done correctly, it spells out "City of Oaks", a common nickname for Raleigh because of the prevalence of oak trees throughout the city.

The "City of Oaks" theme appears in two places. The words appear on the inside of the tail along the hemline, and red stripes on the arms has an oak leaf pattern, which might be my favorite detail on the sweater. The shoulders feature a re-imagined North Carolina flag, as well as the dome of the Capital Building in Raleigh.

The Hurricanes will wear their new sweaters for the first time on Saturday night when the Chicago Blackhawks pay them a visit. It'll be the first of 11 times that the Canes will wear them. They'll don them twice more in November, against Edmonton and Ottawa, twice in December, three times in January, two more times in February, and for the final time in mid-March.

While I won't call them the greatest sweaters in team history, they are a step up from other attempts to create a fun alternate. Again, I can't express how happy I am that Fanatics didn't give the Canes another Whalers uniform, especially since Whalers Night remains a thing. Struttin' Stormy has hit the big time, and now he'll be immortalized in team history forever.
