When it comes to NHL sweaters, there's admittedly room for the league to grow. They've had programs in the past, like the Reverse Retro series that brought us some truly bizarre combinations a few seasons ago, but outside of the random team trying something different, they aren't nearly on the same level as the MLB or the NBA. However, there could be something in the pipeline for next season.
The NHL is yet to make anything official, and we could be months away from it happening, but the rumor mill has been swirling as the first drops have leaked through. Dubbed the Hometown Remix series, an early look showed us the potential jerseys for the Islanders and the Panthers. New York is bringing back the Fisherman logo, while Florida will have the first-ever pink sweaters, a la Miami Vice.
While we've seemingly caught a glimpse of the first two, not much is known beyond that. A video posted by icethetics on YouTube over the weekend provided insights into the remaining 30 teams, including the Hurricanes. It didn't include any designs, though it appears that the Canes' kit will feature a grey base.
The other major detail provided concerns the possible crest for the jersey. Unlike the 2020-21 Reverse Retro, as seen above, the Canes' Hometown Remix sweater won't be Whalers themed, which I think is a win for the team. The Hurricanes already celebrate Whalers Night as its own thing, so it's nice that this will seemingly be something completely separate.
The Hurricanes' jersey releases in the past have been spotty, to put it mildly. Their 2022-23 Reverse Retro kits got the reverse part right without feeling remotely retro. It took the diagonal lettering of the away sweaters and put it on the home base. It wasn't the most imaginative look, and it was paired with the black buckets and pants, creating a massive eyesore.

This past season brought its own set of groans as the team unveiled a new road setup. The team took its Stadium Series jerseys and flipped them to be worn on the road. "Polarizing" would be a very appropriate word to describe the fan response. They weren't without their flaws, but I happened to like them quite a bit, especially once we saw them in action.
The Canes' sweater remains a mystery. It seems very unlikely, but I'd like to see the Struttin' Stormy logo get a little more shine. While the base will be grey, there will likely be a fair bit of red and black. No matter what Fanatics decides for the entire series, I'm sure opinions will vary. We'll have to wait for a few months before we know anything for sure, but it gives us something to look forward to.
