Big Announcement From UNCC And Appalachian State Headlines Week 4

A big announcement for UNCC and Appalachian State headlines our coverage of college hockey week three here in North Carolina.

Adding to the outdoor game with Appalachian State Mountaineers will be playing in Kutztown, PA against the Kutztown University Gold Bears, the ‘Neers will be facing off against the UNCC 49ers in the 2023 Outdoor Classic that will be played on November 17th at Truist Field in Charlotte.

The announcement was made Monday after Appalachian swept two games from UNCC 5-4 and 6-3 in Charlotte. Saturday’s 5-4 win was Appalachian Coach Matt Mingo’s first as a college coach.
Appalachian faces Middle Tennessee State University at MTSU Oct 6th and 7th.
UNCC squares off against UNCW in Wilmington on the 6th and 7th.

Wake Forest had their weekend plans moved around and postponed their matchup against High Point. Their game in Hillsborough against the Blue Devils of Duke University was moved up a day to avoid football gameday traffic. But the schedule did not hamper the Deacs as they tacked 10 on the Blue Devils. WFU is now 2-0 in the ACC Hockey League’s Carolina division.

Wake Forest is away in Chapel Hill to take on the Tar Heels on the 6th and then will be on the road against the Crimson Tide of Alabama on the 12th and 13th.

Duke has the month of October off, but will be back on the ice against The University of Richmond on November 17th at Richmond.

The Panthers of High Point University added to their win colum this weekend as wekk.
The D3 club lost to Elon 6-4 but the D2 squad punched on ECU 10-3. J.R Slayton continued his scoring streak with a hatty and 1 assist. Nick Sasso had 2 goals and 3 assists. Panther goalie Brian Scopel stopped 34 of 35 and had an assist.

The D2 Panthers face the Massachusetts Maritime Academy for two on the 7th and 8th while the D3 Kitties butt up against Central Florida for two on the 6th and 7th.

UNC beat East Carolina 9-1 in week three of the college hockey season. Carolina’s first star of the game Cam Glonek had 2 assists and a goal against the Pirates.

Carolina faces Wake Forest on the 6th at home.

ECU will be at Coastal Carolina University on October 13th and 14th.

The Icepack of NC State started off a two game trip against the Nittany Lions of Penn State with a 3-1 win. Pack goals came from Zach Robinson, Jack Strong, and Ricky Frosch. The game also marked the 100th career start for senior captain Garrett Auriene. The Forward has three goals in three games with the Icepack for the season.

Auriene would start the NC State scoring in the second game with Penn State with a goal only to have PSU come back with 4:42 in the first. Zach Herman would score his first fo the season to make thing 3-2 in favor of the Nittany Lions. Two more third period goals from PSU would punt the nails in the coffin for the Ice Pack making the final score 4-2.

State picks up Liberty University on the 5th at home.

Finally, UNC-Wilmington took the Virginia Tech Hockey Hokies to the beach with a 7-1 win on Saturday.

The Icehawks will host UNCC on the 6th and 7th.
