I did not get to be the age I am, in the condition I find myself without the ability to fill my face with good things. A good mixed drink? Please and Thank You. Fruity fun drink on game day? Game On! BBQ of any variety? Is it easy for Brent Burns to floss? Food and I are….shall we say…..close.

But what about game day food for the Carolina Hurricanes season that is just days away?

I have an idea that is apt to be a hit and is so easy to make. Plus it is better than sitting at home eating plain crackers.

Briefest Aside: I grew up a history nut with a kindergarten teacher and an engineer for parents. They did not know much about history, but I took to Civil War history because, well…it was around. My mom being the smart woman she is, dubbed this “Zouave Food” in an unnecessary attempt to make it more appealing to me. For the uninitiated, in the Confederate Army units made up of French, Cajuns, Poles, and Germans from Louisiana took to wearing Zouave uniforms, thus “Zouave Food.”

History lesson aside, this is perfect food for just about any sporting event, and is good with a fried egg or two on top the next morning.

What You Will Need

3 Cans of Storm Brew (Enough to cover sausage), Polish sausages (as much as you want, in any flavor), Rice (I am a moron so I use “boil in bag”), Canned Black Beans, Canned Red Beans (See what I did there), Salt, Pepper, Butter

Optional But Preferred

Tomatoes, Onion, Red Peppers, Black Pepper, Cayenne Pepper

Instructions

In a pot (big enough to hold all the ingredients) bring brew to boil.

Dice tomatoes, onions, peppers

Wash canned beans

Start cooking rice as instructed

Dump Polish sausages into the boiling brew.

Add spices to taste.

Boil for 5 to 7 minutes.

Remove sausages

Remove ½ to 3/4 of boil and return sausages

Add diced tomatoes, onions, peppers

Turn stove to simmer

Season again

Add rice

Simmer for 3 to 4 minutes

(You can remove all the beer if needed)

Drop in butter and salt and pepper.

Enjoy.

This is super easy and has been a mainstay food in my rotation since I was a kid. On my own, I have messed around with what I have added over the years, and how spicy I like it has changed.

Food is food, and I like it, but “Zouave Food” is one of my favorite things to make on a Carolina Hurricanes gameday. You can make enough for yourself, or you could feed an army of Caniacs.

Either way you enjoy some Storm Brews along the way.
