Guess what Kids Canes reader?!?!? Next week, the season kicks off! The very first Hurricanes game right here! The Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter and I will be covering the Hurricanes all season long but first, we need to talk about goalies.

Last week’s Kids Canes Challenge asked if you knew where Fredrik Andersen, Antti Raanta, and Pyotr Kochetkov were from? Did you know? If you did not, that is fine. We’re about to learn.

Frederik “Great Dane” Andersen is from Herning, Denmark. Denmark is a country in Europe that is near Sweden, Norway, and Finland (remember Finland, we will come back to it in a minute). People from Denmark are called Danes and they speak Danish. Denmark is home to Legos, which is pretty awesome. Also, Hans Christian Andersen, who wrote The Little Mermaid is from Denmark.

Great Dane” Andersen comes from a hockey family. There are two goalies in his family! His dad played goalie in Denmark, and his mom played for the Danish National Team. His younger sister plays hockey too in Denmark. His brother also plays professional hockey! How cool is that? Wonder what they talk about when they all sit down at dinner together? You think they talk hockey

We have talked about Finland, and how “Finns Get Wins”, but did you remember that Antti “Father Finn” Raanta is from Finland? “Father Fin” Raanta is from Rauma, Finland. Finland is a country that is also in Europe. People from Finland are called Finns.Their language is Finnish. Finns make a lot of electronics, and they are involved in the timber industry. In other words they cut down trees and use the wood to make things. It is very cold in Finland (like it is in Denmark) for much of the year, so it is only natural they have good hockey players! Sometimes, it is daylight for only a few hours of the day.

“Father Finn” Raanta played very well all season, and in the playoffs against the New York Islanders. He won 19 games, and had 4 shutouts. We learned last week that a shutout means that the other team did not score a single goal against him.

Pyotr “PK” Kochetkov is by far my favorite of all the Hurricanes goalies. He is exciting to watch! He does whatever he has to to stop the puck. He even scored a goal last year for the Chicago Wolves! WHAT?!?! GOALIES DON’T USUALLY SCORE! He was so excited!

“PK” is from Penza, Russia.
Russia is such a large country that it is in Europe and Asia. It is the largest country in the world. People from Russia are called Russians. It is VERY cold in most of Russia. Because Russia is so big, there are so many people with so many different kinds of jobs.
Wow! What an interesting group of goalies. A Dane, a Finn, and a Russian. All out there stopping puck for the Carolina Hurricanes in North Carolina. Cool! Cool! Cool!
