Game Recap: Kochetkov Shutout against Flyers in NHL Return
The Carolina Hurricanes faced off against the Philadelphia Flyers in a matchup on March 9th, 2023. With backup goalie Antti Raanta out with an injury, the Hurricanes rallied goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov from the Chicago Wolves. The Hurricanes managed to come out on top with a 1-0 shutout over the Flyers.
The only goal of the game was scored by Hurricanes’ forward Svechnikov, assisted by Necas and Burns, on a power play early in the first period.
After that, both teams traded chances but neither was able to find the back of the net.
Lest take a look at the Offensive Zone Heat map via Natural Stat Trick on the five man advantage, the Canes had 3.83 + attempts vs the Flyers at 3.83 + as well. This game could of went either way, but turned into an epic goalie showdown, a dual of two rookie netminders.
The Hurricanes dominated play, outshooting the Flyers 29-19 and controlling the game for long stretches. Kochetkov, making his NHL return, made 19 saves to earn a shutout and the win. His performance was impressive and is currently tied for second in the NHL with four shutouts this season only played 20 games.
The Flyers, meanwhile, struggled to generate offense and were shut out for the second time in three games. Goaltender Felix Sandstrom made 28 saves with tremendous effort but ultimately took the loss.
Despite missing their backup goaltender, they managed to come together as a team and secure a much-needed win. With only a few weeks left in the regular season, every point is crucial in the race for playoff positioning. The Hurricanes will hope to build on this win as they look to make a deep run in the postseason.
