The Carolina Hurricanes have a real gem in the net with Pyotr Kochetkov. He has shown flashes of brilliance this season and could be a special talent.
Recently, Kochetkov was on a tear in his first real stint in the NHL before giving way for Antti Raanta in a streak of games.
Did Rod Brind’Amour do a disservice to Kochetkov?
The young, rising star has struggled in his return to the crease, and to no surprise, the Hurricanes have also struggled. Since ending their incredible winning streak, the Hurricanes have lost three straight.
During the incredible streak in December, Raanta contributed greatly but Kochetkov won the NHL rookie of the month for a reason.
Brind’Amour likes to keep everyone fresh and that is understandable as Raanta had been lacking in starts due to Kochetkov’s play, but also from injury.
Still, the fact remains that since November 29th, Kochetkov had won 8 games for the Hurricanes.
Sure, every goalie needs a break, but Raanta was given five starts in a row for a span of two whole weeks without any game action for Kochetkov.
The Canes were hot, and Raanta racked up five wins in those starts but in two of the games, Raanta surrendered four goals or more in the victories.
Riding the hot goalie during the Canes month-long point run was had by both goalies but it is peculiar that Brind’Amour would mess with the confidence of the youngster at such a high point of his career.
With Frederik Andersen on the mend, Raanta’s playing time could have increased to showcase for potential trade suitors. Nothing has ever been rumored or acted upon if that was the case.
Since returning from his two-week hiatus, the young Russian has looked rusty and out of rhythm.
In two games against the New York Rangers and the Nashville Predators, Kochetkov has surrendered 8 goals. To put that in perspective, Kochetkov had given up just five goals in his last five games.
It is natural for a team playing so well to go on a cold streak but the development and confidence of Kochetkov are important for the long run and this season.
Brind’Amour is a remarkable NHL head coach but that does not mean he is perfect.
A string of four games in six days will give Kochetkov every chance to return to form and get the Canes back in the win column.
