Coming off an OT victory against the division rival, Pittsburgh Penguins, the Carolina Hurricanes have the day off. The team is currently in the midst of a six-game road trip.

That did not stop the general manager, Don Waddell, from working to improve the team and organizational depth.

The old saying is “defense wins championships”.

Well, Waddell added some depth to the defense for the AHL affiliate, Chicago Wolves, and the NHL team with the acquisition of Zachary Hayes from the Las Vegas Golden Knights for future considerations.

With the Hurricane’s cap situation being tight, Waddell does not have much flexibility at the NHL level for roster moves, but this will shore up the defense in Chicago and beyond.

Hayes played 3 games for the Knights last season but has played 103 games at the AHL level with 18 points.

Hayes is not known for his offensive play but for his physical style and size.

Having an impressive plus 31 in his career at the AHL level, the 23-year-old plays a responsible game in his zone and keeps the crease clear for his goaltenders.

A defenseman of this style will naturally rough it up and Hayes has a 105 career PIM in the AHL.

The undrafted defenseman will have an opportunity to play for Chicago and earn an opportunity with the big club.
