The Carolina Hurricanes’ winning streak came to an end last night as the Florida Panthers battled back from a terrible 1st period to secure the win in overtime.

Last night’s game marks the first loss at home the Canes have had since last year, and the first overtime loss the Canes have suffered all season. The Hurricanes’ record drops to 10-3-1, which places them in 4th place of the Discover Central Division behind Tampa Bay, Chicago, and Florida who now sits firmly at the top.

The Carolina Hurricanes came roaring out of the gates in the 1st period of last night’s tilt; they scored two goals (courtesy of Sebastian Aho and Jordan Staal) within 22 seconds of each other in the first 20 minutes of the game to hold a commanding two-goal lead that would eventually be cut to one by Panthers winger Jonathan Huberdeau.

The Canes would all but fall apart from here on out, playing a shadow of the game they played in the 1st period for basically the rest of the game. The Panthers would tie the game up at 2-2 after Alex Wennberg knocks home a goal off of an unreal no-look pass from Huberdeau early in the 3rd period.

Juho Lammikko would score his first NHL goal and give the Cats their first lead of the game. The Canes, courtesy of former Florida Panther Vincent Trocheck, would tie it up at 3 a side moments later, and force the overtime period.

The Canes came roaring into the overtime period (as they are wont to do); Sebastian Aho had an absolute cannon of a slapshot that ultimately hit Florida netminder Chris Driedger right in the crest.

Moments later, Jake Gardiner would make a terrible pass to Andrei Svechnikov (who was fully marked by Aleksander Barkov) in the offensive zone; Barkov would intercept the pass and dish the puck to Huberdeau, who was breaking down the ice. It was all over from that point on.

Huberdeau, as pure a sniper as there is in the league these days, deftly stickhandled the puck in front of Alex Nedeljkovic and buried the game-winner in overtime.

Last night’s game was rough for the Carolina Hurricanes, especially from the mid-2nd period on. They’ll need to regroup relatively quickly, though. They’ve got a back-to-back miniseries against Chicago coming up this Friday and Saturday.
