The Carolina Hurricanes decided to poke their old rivals from the Metro Division on Twitter in a hilarious back and forth bit of savagery. What started out as a poke at the New York Rangers ended up as a dunk on the Pittsburgh Penguins in the funniest way possible.

Let’s start with a bit of context. Last season saw the Canes introduce their brand new away jerseys that featured the nickname Canes spelled diagonally across the front of the new crisp white aways.

It was met with love from the Caniacs and a lot of concern from the rest of the league. It was going to be the fourth logo revealed by the team after their traditional logo, which is still featured on their red home jerseys, their new redesigned third jersey logo on their famous black jerseys, and of course the throwback Whalers logo.

The team that had the most to say about the new jerseys were the New York Rangers who famously have their name run diagonally on their jerseys. They left this cryptic message for the Canes and their fans.

That cheeky response from the Carolina Hurricanes has to be one of the top responses to a sassy move by an opponent. It would be the top of all time if it was not for the absolute sass that happened last night.

With the Reverse Retro jerseys starting to show up on the ice this season, every team got a chance to take a moment from their history and bring it back with a bit of modern flair. For the Carolina Hurricanes it was taking the old Whalers jerseys and giving it a gray tone that they originally wanted for the away jerseys we were just talking about.

For the Pittsburgh Penguins, it was bringing back a jersey that featured lettering spelling out Pittsburgh, you guessed it, Diagonally. Last night they wore it for the first time against the New York Rangers. The Carolina Hurricanes didn’t miss on the opportunity to taunt the Rangers.

Those are some sharp Jerseys. The Canes brought in just enough sass to set the mood going into that game. It’s a nice clean hit on the Rangers and it brought back some fun memories from last year before the whole world came crashing down.

Unfortunately, the Penguins never got the memo of what went down last year and took the whole bit a little too personally and decided to fire a shot across the bow at the Canes.

Not going to lie that is a solid burn. Ignore the fact that the Hurricanes Logo, which was introduced in 1997 when the team moved south from Hartford predates the modern Quiznos look, which didn’t show up until 2002. This was a solid shot. Too bad it is hampered by the fact that the Penguins completely missed the joke and let it sail over their heads.

But the Carolina Hurricanes were not done. Not one bit.

See the Penguins didn’t fare so well against the inventors of diagonal and ended up losing their Reverse Jersey debut to the tune of 3-1. Even after Sidney Crosby decided that he could possibly pull a Svechnikov. Spoiler alert, he couldn’t. How could he? He is nowhere near as talented as Andrei. (For legal purposes Pens fans, that was a joke. Maybe you are better than your social media team at identifying those?)

The Carolina Hurricanes in their infinite generosity decided to send them a final gift to show their old Metro Division rivals just how much they care about them. They sent them a quick postgame meal gift card to, you guessed it Quiznos.

Now it doesn’t matter what team you are a fan of, this is hilarious. While the Penguins social media team might get to enjoy a delicious sub from Quiznos, they will also be feasting on plenty of crow.

The lesson to be learned here is that if you come at the Carolina Hurricanes, they will come back at you twice as hard, when you are at your lowest, and when you least expect it. Best to not throw their way at all and move about your day.
