The Carolina Hurricanes have signed Seth Jarvis

The Carolina Hurricanes have agreed to terms with their first-round Draft Pick inking him to a three-year Entry-Level Contract.

The draft was only three months ago, (well more like four) but it already feels like forever ago in this elongated dumpster fire of a year known as 2020 so I will completely forgive you if you have forgotten who Seth Jarvis is.

He was the Carolina Hurricanes’ first-round pick with the 13th overall, courtesy of the Toronto Maple Leafs in the trade that sent the legendary Patrick Marleau to Raleigh only to be bought out. But I digress. Jarvis, coming from the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL has finally signed his first NHL contract with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Now normally this sort of news would have come in August or September right before the season started, but this is not a normal year. Instead, here we are after Christmas announcing his new contract. So what does it look like?

The three-year slidable ELC will pay the young forward $832,500 at the NHL level or $80,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level. He will also get a sweet signing bonus of $277,500. This would put his cap hit at around $925,000 when he does make it to the show.

This seems to be the going rate for first-round draft picks considering that this is precisely the same deal that Andrei Svechnikov and Ryan Suzuki both got (although Jarvis is getting an extra $10,000 at the minor league). This shows the faith that the team has in Jarvis in hopefully making the team. So when can we expect the kid to show up in Raleigh?

Right now he is still only 18 years old but isn’t the generational talent that Svechnikov is. That isn’t to say that he won’t one day become a mainstay staple of the Hurricanes offense. He has plenty of talent and has been cruising circles around his WHL opponents. But he isn’t NHL ready in terms of size and strength just yet. The good news is that will easily come with time.

The team certainly seems to have faith that it will. GM Don Waddell had this to say about Seth and his future with the team:

"“Seth is an extremely talented player with elite puck skills and scoring ability. He has a very bright future, and we are excited to watch him continue his development into an NHL player.”"

The kid himself is really excited to join his future teammates in Raleigh. And while he would normally have a chance to give the fans a sneak peek during either the prospect camp or the preseason, he will have to wait until at least next season to truly give us a look at what we could be getting.

We are going to have to get you a different number to wear there bud, but we are more than thrilled to officially welcome you to the family. We will see you in Raleigh soon enough.
