The National Hockey League has officially put the season on pause. That means no Carolina Hurricanes games until the Coronavirus situation is controlled.

Ladies and gentleman, yesterday and today have been two tough days for the sports world. Yesterday the NBA season got suspended and today several other College Basketball tournaments have been suspended as well.

The most upsetting though, for hockey fans? The news that came today around 1PM when it was announced that the remainder of the Carolina Hurricanes season and the remaining 30 NHL teams seasons have been put on hold.

Commissioner of the National Hockey League Gary Bettman released the following statement this afternoon informing hockey fans all around how they were going to proceed with caution.

As upsetting as this news may be, it makes perfect sense considering what is going on with the Coronavirus Disease (also known as COVID-19), and as Bettman says in the statement above the NHL is “attempting to follow the mandates of health experts and local authorities, while preparing for any possible developments”

Before this statement was released today, both the Columbus Blue Jackets and San Jose Sharks had released statements last night stating that they would be playing their home games in front of media and personnel staff only, as well as their families. No fans were allowed to be in attendance at the remaining scheduled home games.

It’s also worth noting that as of this moment, Gary Bettman wants the NHL to finish out the season before starting the playoffs at a later date as previously planned. Many fans thought the NHL may jump straight into the playoffs considering the circumstances and not resume the regular season.

At the moment though, Bettman would still like to keep things as usual and resume NHL games when it is safe to.

While this news is upsetting to Hurricanes fans and NHL fans all around, there’s no denying that this is for the best. The sooner we can contain and prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, the sooner we can all get back to our usual ways.

Plus, there are a couple of advantages to this wait for Hurricanes fans such as getting Dougie Hamilton back in the roster depending on when the NHL starts back up, as well as Sami Vatanen, and James Reimer who are on the injuries/scratches list too.

As hard as this break from hockey is going to be for us all, take some time during this down period and spend it with the ones you love. Be grateful for everything that you have in life and don’t ever take a single day for granted. Hockey will still be here once all of this gets better.
