Carolina Hurricanes: LIVE NHL Trade Deadline Coverage

Today is one of the most exciting days in the NHL calendar: Trade Deadline Day! Keep checking back as we follow all the rumors, not only for the Carolina Hurricanes but across the league. This should wrap up trades for today, but if more are announced, we will update this article as the information becomes available.

Trades that are coming in today:

February 24:

Of course these are the trades that get announced after the deadline ends at 3pm EST today. Minor-league trade. Again. No winners. Again.

Winner: Whoever is getting views from ‘breaking’ these trades.

Coyotes get a decent depth defenseman in return for a conditional 7th that only gets sent if Hannikainen plays 10 games for Arizona. Edge to Arizona in this one.

Winner: Arizona Coyotes

Yet another depth/minor-league trade. Nothing to see here.

Winner: Not Bowman, that’s for sure.

This one is another depth trade. Tons of those today. No clear winner, although the price for Cousins was relatively low.

Winner: Neither.

This is kind of a weird one, I think. Capitals send out a promising young defenseman to get… Daniel Sprong? Go off, I guess?

Winner: Anaheim Ducks

Among the few trades trickling in is this one. Brandon Davidson to San Jose from Calgary. Yet another depth/minor-league trade. I hate ‘future considerations’. Sharks win, I guess.

Winner: San Jose Sharks

Trades are still trickling in as the deadline has passed. Vancouver has acquired G Louis Domingue from the New Jersey Devils. G Zane McIntyre headed to New Jersey in return. I think I speak for all of us when I say, ‘Who?’ Vancouver wins this one by a long shot.

Winner: Vancouver Canucks

Welp, Don Waddell is a wizard. It is confirmed. After picking up Sami Vatanen, the Carolina Hurricanes acquire Brady Skjei. This move seems to be slightly in favor of the Carolina Hurricanes at this point, but if Skjei can return to his former glory, the Canes will emerge the true winners. The condition for the pick is that the Rangers will receive whichever 1st round pick the Carolina Hurricanes own (their own or TOR’s) is set to go later in the 1st round.

Winner: Too early to tell for sure, but for now, Carolina.

One of the final trades to be announced on deadline day is Barclay Goodrow to the Tampa Bay Lightning for a 2020 1st and Anthony Greco. Goodrow is good, but not worth a 1st. I’m actually going to say neither team wins this one. Goodrow goes from a tanking team to a legit contender. Good for him.

Winner: Barclay Goodrow

One of the biggest and most unpredictable moves to happen this year, to be honest. I didn’t see this one coming. Vegas picks up arguably the best goalkeeper available in Lehner after Toronto retains 50% of his salary. Vegas gives them a 5th round pick in this year’s draft in return. Return to Chicago is a 2nd round pick in 2020, Malcolm Subban, and prospect Stanislav Demin. Vegas still comes out the winner here.

Winner: Vegas Golden Knights

Solid trade for Anaheim. Devin Shore reportedly wanted out of there, and the Ducks pick up a solid young guy in Sonny Milano.

Winners: Anaheim Ducks

THERE IT IS! The Carolina Hurricanes have been linked to Sami Vatanen for what seems like MONTHS. Don Waddell and Co. pulled the trigger at the 11th hour, with less than 10 minutes remaining in the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline. The prospects in question headed to New Jersey are Janne Kuokkanen and Fredrik Claesson. The draft pick is a conditional 4th round pick in 2020 that can be a 3rd pending Vatanen games played. New Jersey will also be retaining 50% of Vatanen’s salary. Canes are the clear winners here. Vatanen was the best D-man on an ailing New Jersey squad.

Winners: Carolina Hurricanes

 This is another minor-league deal here. Nothing too big at all.

Winner: Meh.

Looks like Pittsburgh isn’t done, folks. They pick up Evan Rodrigues and Conor Sheary from the Sabres. Looks like the Sabres will get Dominik Kahun from Pittsburgh. Will update if more details become available. So far, Buffalo is the winner in this one, I think. Kahun is the better player of the three, and Buffalo sheds $5M in basically dead cap space.

Winner: Buffalo Sabres

This one is huge. Gustafsson was a big name on the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline board, and will be heading to Calgary. Return to Chicago is a conditional 3rd round pick in 2020. The condition is as follows: Chicago will receive the earlier of Calgary or Edmonton’s 2020 3rd round pick (on the requirement that Edmonton’s pick meets its conditions and becomes the property of Calgary. The Edmonton pick is a conditional pick that Calgary does not yet own. Huge win for Calgary via the infamous 3rd round pick this season.

Winner: Calgary Flames

Solid pickup for Calgary here from a team who is starting a rebuild. Forbort is a depth defenseman, but will be serviceable in Calgary. Conditions are as follows: if the Flames make it to the conference final and he plays in half the games or if they re-sign him it becomes a 3rd rounder in 2022. LA retains 25% of his salary.

Winner: Calgary

Edmonton is making moves! Ottawa is clearly having a fire sale, and starting their rebuild from scratch. Edmonton wins this one again, my dudes.

Winner: Edmonton Oilers

This one is bigger than it seems. Imagine Andreas Athanasiou on a line with Connor McDavid. Absolutely unreal, and a huge get for Edmonton, who have been surprise dark horses this season. New info has indicated that the Red Wings will receive two 2nd round draft picks in return, evening this trade up a bit. I’m still giving the edge to the Oilers.

Winner: Edmonton Oilers

This is another depth trade, but I think Anaheim gets the slight edge in this one. Very rare good trade for both teams.

Winner: Anaheim, but just barely.

Wayne Simmonds, another big name on the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline board, has been dealt to the Buffalo Sabres for a 2021 5th round pick that could turn into a 4th if Buffalo makes the playoffs and Simmonds plays 10 games. The Devils will also be retaining 50% of Simmonds’ salary. Normally, I’d balk at a team like this season’s Sabres being buyers, but that is an absolute STEAL for Buffalo. New Jersey got fleeced.

Winner: Buffalo Sabres, by several miles.

Now HERE is a blockbuster! Just kidding, this is another minor deal with some depth guys. Nothing crazy to see here.

Winner: Both, I guess?

Maple Leafs ship off Hutchinson, a backup goalie, to get Calle Rosen, a solid defensive prospect. This one is a headscratcher for sure. The Toronto Maple Leafs must be pursuing a deal with Dave Ayres.

Winner: I don’t even know anymore. Avs, I guess?

Chris Kreider has re-signed with the New York Rangers on a 7-year deal worth close to $6.5M AAV. With this re-signing, the biggest name on the 2020 NHL Trade Deadline has been taken off the board. Good on ya, Rags.

Winner: Chris Kreider

There it is! Pittsburgh has been rumored to have been after Marleau for a few days, with those rumors ramping up in frequency and accuracy today. San Jose will be getting a 3rd in return, as have most teams who have traded a ‘depth’ player this season. Marleau is still plenty servicable this season, however.

Winner: Pittsburgh Penguins

This one is more of a minor deal. Montreal gets a draft pick, Philadelphia get a solid depth guy. Even trade, if you ask me.

Winner: Both

There it is! The Carolina Hurricanes’ first trade on deadline day. This one is a bit of head-scratcher. Vincent Trocheck is a huge pickup, but I’m not sure that its a huge win having given up Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark, Chase Priskie, and Eetu Luostarinen. Nonetheless, this is ultimately a win for the Canes. Haula is a UFA and was more than likely gone after this season. Trocheck is better than Wallmark, and Priskie was a redundancy due to Joey Keane.

Winner: Carolina Hurricanes, by the skin of their teeth.

Ok, so this is certifiably the first ‘blockbuster’ trade of Deadline Day. A clear-cut winner is hard to determine in this one, as Pageau is a perfect fit for the Islanders, but Ottawa also gets a TON of picks. If NYI 2020 1st is a Top 3, it moves to 2021. 2022 3rd only gets transferred if NYI wins the Cup in 2020.

Winner: New York Islanders, by a hair if Pageau re-signs with them. If not, Ottawa is a clear winner here.

Welp, there it is, ladies and gentlemen. Namestnikov is on his way to Colorado for a 4th round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. The Senators had been speculated to be moving him by the end of the day, and it finally happened.

Winner: Colorado Avalanche

The first trade to officially happen on trade deadline day, the Edmonton Oilers have acquired Mike Green in the early morning hours from the free-falling Detroit Red Wings for Kyle Brodziak‘s contract, and a conditional 4th round pick in 2020 that can become a 2021 3rd round pick if the Oilers make the Western Conference Finals and Green plays in 50% of the games. The Red Wings will also retain 50% of Green’s salary.

Winner: Edmonton, by a long shot.

Rumors:

Carolina Hurricanes: According to Elliotte Friedman, the Carolina Hurricanes have some interest in Florida Panthers’ C Vincent Trocheck

Update, 10:10am EST: The Carolina Hurricanes and the Florida Panthers are finalizing a deal to send Vincent Trocheck to Carolina, with Priskie being part of Florida’s return.

Update, 1:45pm EST: Carolina Hurricanes are reportedly in talks with New York Rangers to get a deal for Brady Skjei worked out according to Pierre LeBrun. Canes cap issues complicating things.

New York Rangers: Larry Brooks of the New York Post has reported that the New York Rangers will be moving Chris Kreider before today’s deadline. Contract talks broke down between the forward and the Rangers recently. The Rangers are believed to have offered Kreider a 6-year extension worth just shy of $7M annually, but Kreider is reportedly seeking a 7-year term.

Teams thought to have interest in him are Boston, Colorado, St. Louis, Tampa Bay, and Vegas.

Update, 9:13am EST: According to TSN’s Frank Seravalli, Jesper Fast is expected to be traded today.

Update, 9:18am EST: Seravalli also mentioned that a Kreider-to-Colorado move would cost something close to a 1st + Tyson Yost + a prospect.

Update, 11:15am EST: Chris Kreider is expected to re-sign with the New York Rangers, according to Darren Dreger.

Chicago Blackhawks: Erik Gustafsson will be ‘virtually guaranteed’ to be moved today, according to Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times. Gustafsson was left in Chicago as the Blackhawks embarked on their road trip.

Robin Lehner could still be moved as well, and has recently been linked to teams such as Carolina, Columbus, Pittsburgh, the Islanders, Vegas, or Colorado. According to SportsNet, Brandon Saad is also in play.

San Jose Sharks: There has been no confirmation that Joe Thorton will waive his NMC according to Jimmy Murphy of Boston Hockey Now.

The Sharks are taking calls on both Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleua today; both forwards would be looking to go to a Cup contender and would be welcomed back on July 1st, according to TSN’s Pierre LeBrun. Pittsburgh has shown interest in Marleau.

Update, 10:07am EST: According to Josh Yohe, the Penguins are making a big push to acquire Patrick Marleau.

Update, 1:08pm EST: According to Kevin Kurz of The Athletic San Francisco, the Dallas Stars are pushing hard for Joe Thornton, who would reportedly be willing to go there.

Ottawa Senators: The Senators are still trying to sign Jean-Gabriel Pageau as of today; according to TSN, the Sens are expected to ‘make some moves’ today.

Winnipeg Jets: According to Andy Strickland, Dustin Byfuglien will NOT be playing hockey in the NHL this season.

Free Agents: Surprisingly, Thomas Vanek’s agent, Steve Bartlett, has reached out to ‘a few top teams’ to gauge interest in the free agent as a depth/insurance player for a playoff push according to Michael Russo.

Toronto Maple Leafs: The Leafs are trying to trade Tyson Barrie right now, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie. The win in Pittsburgh made them hesitant to move him, but the Carolina Hurricanes ‘locked the Leafs into trading Barrie’.

Vancouver Canucks: According to SportsNet’s Iain MacIntyre, the Canucks haven’t been trying to move Troy Stecher, and can’t afford to subtract a lineup regular.

Minnesota Wild: According to TSN’s Frank Seravailli, the Wild are getting lots of calls on D Greg Pateryn.
