Carolina Hurricanes Top Highlight Reel Goals of 2019
The Carolina Hurricanes have scored many spectacular goals in 2019. As the year comes to a close and with only three games left, let us pick the five top highlight reel goals of the year.
The Carolina Hurricanes have gone from a team that cannot find the back of the net to save its season to a team that defenses and goalies fear equally. They have proven that they can score on you from literally anywhere on the ice. ANYWHERE. There seems to be no retrieve from the possibility of getting scored on whenever the canes hit the ice.
With only three games left on the calendar year the Hurricanes have a plethora of goals to look back on. 315 goals, to be exact, have been scored since the the beginning of 2019 including goals scored in the playoffs. So which goals have been the most influential, the most highlight reel inducing goals of this calendar year?
To be frank, going through 315 goals and picking out just five, less than 2%, as the top of the calendar was not a simple task. I loved every single one of them. So many to look at and so many to consider, so forgive me if one of your favorite goals of the year didn’t make it onto my limited list. So where do we start? With Sebastian Aho of course.
5. Sebastian Aho OT winner vs Florida Panthers, Mar 3rd
What I love about this goal is that it was a fuill 200 foot goal. Perhaps even more if you consider the heroics of Petr Mrazek who makes an incredible stick save that not only saved a goal, but the whole game, to start a chain reaction that finished with Aho scoring a game winning OT goal at the other end of the rink. Incredible.
4. Warren Foegele Monster Deke vs Washington Capitals, Mar 29
When Warren Foegele turns it on, he turns it on. This goal is on this list for many reason, while the Carolina Hurricanes do go on to lose this game, they did so fighting as best they could. Here Foegele dekes the entire Capitals team, including goaltender Braden Holtby to score on the easiest shot on goal ever. The whole thing is a work of art and deserves to hand in The Louvre.
3. Andrei Svechnikov 1st NHL Lacrosse goal vs Calgary Flames, Oct 30
Ever watch a goal and say “wait what?” and everyone is confounded with what just happened? This is what happened here, except everyone knew exactly what just happened and were still confounded. Welcome to the new world order that Andrei Svechnikov just created when he scored the first Lacrosse/Michigan/Mike Legg goal in NHL history. Would he do it again?
2. Andrei Svechnikov 2nd NHL Lacrosse Goal vs Winnipeg Jets, Dec 18
We all knew the answer to that. Yes he would do it again. And the second time was no less exciting that the first time we saw it. At this point the move has been done twice by only one person in the whole league. There have been other attempts by other players on other teams, but no one has been able to do it so quickly and smoothly. Its ‘The Svechnikov’ now. Deal with it.
1. Brock McGinn 2OT Winner vs Washington Capitals, Apr 25

Game seven. Double overtime. Playing in an arena you haven’t won in for over a year. Next goal moves on in the playoffs. Loser goes home and nurses their wounds until next year. The stakes are rarely any higher. The game has now gone on for almost a centennial number of minutes. Everyone is tired. But you cannot let up. To let up is to make a mistake to make a mistake is to lose the game. To go home.
The Carolina Hurricanes did not let up that night. It payed off. Justin Williams found Brock McGinn to set up a game seven double overtime game winning goal that sent the Carolina Hurricanes forward to its first Playoff round victory in about a decade’s worth of time. The goal heard ’round the world indeed. That is how you cap off the top highlights of the Calendar year. That is how you make your mark on history.
With three more games left in the season it is very possible that there be a goal that can beat any of the above. However, that is not very probable. Who knows. But with 315 goals to choose from, perhaps there was one that I missed that belongs up here. If you think so, let me know.
