The last time the Carolina Hurricanes started the season 4-0-0 was the 1995-96 season. They were Hartford Whalers. Pop culture changed drastically in that time period.

Last nights Carolina Hurricanes regulation 6-3 victory over the Florida Panthers marked the second time the franchise started the season 4-0-0. The first time this start happened, it was the 1995-96 season. The team was the Hartford Whalers.

Even though hockey fans cheer for their teams with the same fiery passion, 1995 seems like a different world than 2019. With the potential of making franchise history Friday night, a win over the New York Islanders would equal best start, we should revisit 1995 first.

If you wanted to listen to your favorite songs, TLC “Waterfalls,” Coolio “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and Mariah Carey “Fantasy” were popular around this time, you could not look it up on YouTube or I tunes. You had to hope the song will play on the radio or you had a CD with the song.

Windbreakers, mom jeans, butterfly clips, and denim on denim were popular items of clothing during 1995. Anyone who is brave enough to wear any of these clothes is encouraged. You will get points if it is bedazzled in Carolina Hurricanes logos.

Speaking of your phone, you most likely only had a landline in 1995. If you wanted to talk to your friends after the game, it required a phone call. There is no Twitter to tweet your joy with fellow fans. No like buttons…no WIFI! If you were luck, you might of had dial-up internet…just hope no one picks up the phone.

Instead of cheering on James Reimer, Ryan Dzingel, and Teuvo Teravainen, the three stars of the 6-3 win over the Florida Panthers. Popular players on the Hartford Whalers included Glen Wesley, Brendan Shanahan, and Jason Muzzatti.

All three of these former players have a job in the NHL. In Muzzatti case, he now a goaltender coach for the Carolina Hurricanes instead of goalie for the Hartford Whalers. (Talk about going full circle!)

If you are heading to the Carolina Hurricanes game on Friday, hopefully the price of gas will be $1.15 like it was in 1995, let us prepare by making a playlist of our favorite tunes from 1995. Mine includes some Alice in Chains and Smashing Pumpkins! Pick your favorite movies to watch from that year, Clueless, The Usual Suspects, or Toy Story.
