The Carolina Hurricanes’ Defenseman was injured in the first game of the second round series against the Islanders. The Hurricanes announced today he will miss the remainder of the postseason.

One thing that will certainly help the Carolina Hurricanes after sweeping the Islanders is time off. The Hurricanes have lost Micheal Ferland, Trevor van Riemsdyk, Petr Mrazek, Jordan Martinook, Saku Maenalanen, and Andrei Svechnikov all for multiple games at different points this season.

However, the rest will not be enough time for Trevor van Riemsdyk to return to the lineup. He is unfortunately having season ending surgery after playing truly great hockey throughout the season and in the first round against the Capitals.

He has been the sixth man in a stacked defense this year for the Hurricanes, but he would probably be higher on a lot of other depth charts. He was noticeably good in round one, and was probably the only good player in Game 5 against the Capitals when the Hurricanes got rocked 6-0.

The silver lining is that Haydn Fleury has shown to be a capable third pairing defenseman in TvR’s absence. Jake Bean has also been recalled and sent back to Charlotte, and he has yet to see time in the playoffs.

Fleury has played in a handful of games this postseason and was consistently the seventh man in the rotation during the regular season. For him, this stacked defensive lineup for the Hurricanes has hindered his ability to shine in the NHL.

On a lot of other teams, Haydn Fleury would be an NHL regular. It is obvious in Checkers games that he is a man among boys, already outgrowing the minor leagues. This will  give him an opportunity to showcase his talents on the national stage and maybe finally get that elusive first NHL goal.

All in all, this is definitely a big loss for the Hurricanes. However, Haydn has shown to be capable and the Hurricanes are returning a lot of starpower. Martinook and Svech have both returned, Ferland and Mrazek should be back soon. Saku is still TBD.
