Another round of Carolina Hurricanes links our editors gathered for your enjoyment.
The Carolina Hurricanes won their first home opener in eight years. The team finally has a truly elite offensive threat in what feels like forever. The Hurricanes are even getting some love from the #fancystats crew as well. (On a side note it seems both the old schoolers and analytics crowd finally agree on something: Carolina’s goaltending is bad.)
What a difference just one win makes to the team’s outlook. Before the Rangers, everybody was yelling at Ron Francis to go trade for a goalie. Now people are planning the Stanley Cup Parad route. Well maybe it hasn’t gotten that far yet, but the #Canes fans are definitely a little peppier these days. Compared to early this week after the brutal loss to the Red Wings fans outlook is like night and day.

Links and Links and Links and Links!
- Ben Pope wrote earlier this week about the Carolina Hurricanes goaltending situation. Specifically how much blame should be placed on the goalies or on the defense. His conclusion was that the defense deserves a little bit more of the blame than fans are giving them for the Canes’ goalies’ poor performances. Some of us here at Cardiac Cane disagree with this conclusion given that the goals save is only 1.25 over six games and with his method which includes binning data. We believe xG is a much better prediction of shot quality on goalies instead of Low Danger, Medium Danger, and High Danger shots. Still a great article and well researched. It’s a refreshing new viewpoint on Carolina’s goalie situation
- This next link isn’t strictly about the Hurricanes, but is one of the best hockey writers out there. Sean McIndoe does a weekly grab bag every Friday covering random events that happened in the NHL or hockey throughout the week. If you love hockey and your not reading this guys stuff everyday you’re missing out. He’s one of the best in the business. You can find the rest of his stuff at his blog DownGoesBrown.
- Over at Canes Country that put together a nice piece detailing all the home openers back to 2005. Really wish they would have went ALL the way back, but the 2005 lockout represents the beginning of a new era in the NHL so it’s understandable. Still if you like Carolina Hurricanes history read this piece.
- The guys over at Canes & Coffee do a piece on the importance of the next month and a half as opposed to looking just the opening road trip. It’s a good reminder that the Canes didn’t really start doing damage to themselves until the month of November. Wonder what the season holds for the Hurricanes after Halloween this year
