Carolina Hurricanes Force Overtime but Fall to the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2

On Rod Brind’Amour night, the Carolina Hurricanes show heart, but fall to the Philadelphia Flyers in overtime.

Scoring Summary

1st Period

No Goals

2nd Period

PHI PPG (10:20) – Brayden Schenn (6) , assisted by Jakub Voracek (9), Claude Giroux (8)

On the powerplay, Voracek walked in and hit Gostisbhere with a good centering pass, and he put it past a sprawling Eddie Lack to make it 1-0.

PHI SHG (15:08) – Claude Giroux (7), assisted by Sean Couturier (3)

A man down, the Flyers broke out of their own zone on a 2-on-1, and Couturier bounced it off Lack’s pads and right to Giroux for the goal to make it 2-0.

3rd Period

CAR Goal (7:58) – Victor Rask (6), assisted by John-Michael Liles (2), Justin Faulk (8)

Driving the net paid off for Rask as he put home a wide open rebound chance after a shot from Liles. That goal cut the Flyers lead in half.

CAR Goal (16:15) – Brett Pesce (2), assisted by Ron Hainsey (3), Elias Lindholm (2)

Again, good things happen when you go to the net, and this time, it was the rookie defenseman who made a great decision to drive the net. There was good rotation on the blue line with Lindholm coming back to the point and Hainsey shifting to Pesce’s side, which gave Pesce a chance to go to the net undetected, and he banked home an open rebound to tie the game late in period three.

Overtime

PHI PPG (0:24) – Shayne Gostisbhere (1), assisted by Claude Giroux (9), Jakub Voracek (10)

The Flyers took advantage of a questionable penalty early in the extra frame, and Gostibhere registered his first goal of the season to give Philly the extra point and a 3-2 win.

Three Stars

1st Star – Shayne Gostisbhere (PHI) – GWG, +1, 2 shots, 16:56 TOI

2nd Star – Claude Giroux (PHI) – 1 goal, 2 assists, +1, 2 shots, 2 hits, 19:22 TOI

3rd Star – Brett Pesce (CAR) – 1 goal, 2 shots, 2 hits, 23:06 TOI

Recap

On a night that honored Rod Brind’Amour, a hall of fame bound player that spent significant periods of his career both in Carolina and Philadelphia, the Canes came out on the wrong side of a 3-2 score.

More from Cardiac Cane – What to Expect from Rookie Jaccob Slavin

The Carolina Hurricanes could have accepted their fate on Monday night against the Philadelphia Flyers. They entered the final 20 minutes down 2-0 on the road after playing the day before, but they didn’t let up.

More from Cardiac Cane

A third period comeback forced overtime between the Canes and Flyers, but an early penalty to Victor Rask in the extra frame gave Philly a golden opportunity to send their fan home happy, and that’s exactly what they did.

Overtime losses are tough, but in this game, there were a lot of positives that should give the Hurricanes and their fan base a lot to be happy about.

Brett Pesce played out of his mind against the Flyers. He logged a career-high 23:06 of time on ice, and he made a crucial play to ultimately force the game to overtime. He also made one of the defensive plays of the year by being fearless and putting his body on the line for his club.

He continues to improve, and he has been the brightest spot on this club ever since he was recalled back in October. He may never see a game in the AHL again if he keeps this up.

The Swedes came to play for Carolina on Monday. Victor Rask scored a goal by going to the net and putting home a rebound, Eddie Lack kept the team in it through the opening 2 periods, and Elias Lindholm had a great follow up to his impressive game on Sunday against the Kings. Lindholm tallied his second assist in as many games with a helper on Pesce’s goal. Rask and Lindholm were a combined +4 on the night.

Justin Faulk had a bit of a rough night. He made some head-scratching turnovers and had some defensive miscues, but considering his body of work this season, this off game is not something to be worried about. Expect him to bounce back in a big way against the Oilers on Wednesday.

There were plenty of positives and negatives from Carolina’s loss to the Flyers. They struggles against Giroux and Voracek from the opening faceoff to the final goal, they made some questionable defensive decisions, and the Canes struggled again on the man advantage.

On the flip side of that, the young blue line led by Brett Pesce shined, Eddie Lack delivered his best effort as a Hurricane, and they fought back to overcome a 2-goal deficit in the 3rd period.
