Eddie Lack picked up his first win as a Hurricane on Thursday. He stopped 17 of 19 shots from the Isles, and he played better than his stats indicated. He made big saves at big moments, and most importantly, he didn’t let the soft goal in like he has in his first two starts of the season.
The Carolina blue line had a great game, for the most part. They warded off the Islanders and NHL’s 4th-ranked offense throughout the night, thanks in large part to the play of rookies Noah Hanifin and Brett Pesce, both of whom were fantastic as they went against a very good team on the road.
In his third NHL game, Brett Pesce recorded a career high 20:41 of time on ice and was a +1.
The Canes went down early in this one against an Islanders team that entered the evening as the 3rd place team in the Eastern Conference. They didn’t give up on the game, however, and they were relentless in the 3rd period in route to the overtime victory.
Carolina Hurricanes
It was a total team effort for the Hurricanes. The big money players showed up, the fourth line chipped in, the defense held the high-flying Islanders to 2 goals and kept John Tavares off the scoreboard completely, and the goalie made saves when they needed it.
This is a big win for the Carolina Hurricanes. They finish the dreadful seven-game road trip with a record north of .500 at 4-3-0, and now they will play 10 of their next 12 games on home ice at the PNC Arena.
It was still far from a perfect game for the Canes, specifically on offense. The first 2 periods were largely disappointing in terms of the offensive output. The club put just 12 shots on net through 40 minutes, but they were able to more than double their shots in period three with 13 shots put on Thomas Greiss, and then 4 more, including the game-winning goal from Hainsey, in overtime.
The Carolina Hurricanes ended up outshooting the New York Islanders 29-19.
The Canes will get back at it on Friday night against the Colorado Avalanche on home ice. It’ll be the team’s first game at the PNC Arena since October 13. The team is 0-2-0 on home ice this season, but they’ll look to turn it around against the Avs.
