Some huge saves from goalie John Gibson, of the Anaheim Ducks, powered his team past the Carolina Hurricanes at the Honda Center on Dec. 11.

Four straight losses for the Carolina Hurricanes put them far behind in the race in the Metropolitan Division. However, the Anaheim Ducks have not fared much better of late. The Ducks started the December slate with four losses in five tries. Both teams needed a win on Dec. 11, at the Honda Center.

Scott Darling got the start for the Canes, while John Gibson got the start for the Ducks. Gibson has been solid in net for the Ducks this season, while Darling had his fair share of struggles. Yet, this was a good chance to respond at an opportune time for Darling between the pipes.

Justin Williams helped the Canes get off to a fast start, with a goal less than two minutes into the first period on a Trevor van Riemsdyk shot. Anaheim would score three consecutive goals after that Williams tally for the Canes.

Derek Grant started the scoring for the Ducks less than four minutes after the Canes took the lead. A big mistake from rookie defenseman Haydn Fleury led to a breakaway goal for Jakob Silfverberg in the second period.

A third period goal from Logan Shaw sealed the victory for the Canes. Darling lost his stick just before the goal from Shaw and was able to beat him on the blocker side. That was a good representation of what the night was like for the Canes on defense.

Victor Rask did give the Canes some hope with a goal late in the third period. Elias Lindholm and Rask have been playing well of late for this team. Lindholm drew a tripping penalty that also gave the Canes some quality scoring chances in the final period. But, it was not enough before the Ducks came away with the 3-2 victory.

Here’s the takeaways from the Anaheim Ducks’ victory over the Carolina Hurricanes on Dec. 11.
