Tragic Loss of the Gaudreau Brothers
Unfortunately, we see and experience tragedies in our lives and today is one of those moments for all hockey fans worldwide who knew Johnny Gaudreau. First, I want to send my heartfelt condolences to Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau's family and friends. The tragic passing of these two young men has hit everyone in hockey and I am just one of the many.
Gaudreau had some magic moments on the ice, but above all, he was a loving husband and father of two. As a father myself, also having two children, I cannot help but think of my children and family losing a father, husband, son, and brother. Matthew and his widow are expecting their first child. I cannot fathom the pain and sadness the Gaudreau family is feeling on what was supposed to be a weekend of celebration for Gaudreau's sister. The family was preparing for a wedding this weekend. Life is too short and sometimes things happen that we cannot understand.
The fans in Columbus and Calgary have made their way to the respective arenas to pay tribute to "Johnny Hockey" and leave flowers, photos, and personal items. The heartfelt messages from former teammates and opponents have been beautiful but only made the whole situation more painful.
It is difficult to even think about hockey or the upcoming NHL season but thanks to the wonderful sport of hockey, we all were introduced to the Gaudreau brothers. For that, I am once again thankful to this great sport.
It will be an especially emotional start to this NHL season, particularly in Calgary and Columbus. We will all mourn the great loss of these two fine men. We will remember the greatness of their play on the ice and honor them.
As a father, my prayers will be with the Gaudreau family and I know that the great hockey community will provide the strongest support system for the family. Life is too short, cherish every person and day you have!
