The Carolina Hurricanes kept their homestand rolling on Friday night, trying to snap a two-game skid against the Winnipeg Jets. The Canes spent the night before Thanksgiving falling short against the New York Rangers, dropping a 4-2 decision against their division rival. Shayne Gostisbehere and Seth Jarvis provided the goals.
The lineup remained the same for the Hurricanes, meaning that Jordan Staal would miss his third straight game with an illness. Brandon Bussi took the net for the Canes. He started in Winnipeg a week ago, leading the team to a 4-3 win. Thomas Milic was in the net for the Jets as the 22-year-old goalie made his NHL debut.
The Canes wasted a pair of golden opportunities on the power play, yet they still managed to get the ice breaker. The top line moved the puck well before Shayne Gostisbehere fed Seth Jarvis in front of the net. The pride of Winnipeg snapped home his 13th goal of the season, finally denting Milic's armor. After Bussi denied Cole Perfetti's breakaway, the Canes held their advantage into the break.
For every good thing the Hurricanes did for most of the first half of the contest. One mistake changed the game's trajectory. Andrei Svechnikov flubbed a pass right to Gabriel Vilardi. He sprung Mark Scheifele for a breakaway, and the Jets' leading scorer made no mistake, beating Bussi under his glove to tie it. All of a sudden, the Canes were tied through two periods.
If there was any doubt that the Hurricanes were the better team, just look at the third period. It took them a bit, but two goals in 47 seconds put them ahead for good. It started with Jordan Martinook finding a soft spot to finish a pass from Mark Jankowski. Then, Jarvis doubled up. K'Andre Miller found Jarvis sneaking down from the line before finishing it to double the lead.
To finish it off, Jarvis closed the door into the empty net. Svechnikov led Jarvis out of the zone with Milic on the bench, allowing him to finish the second hat trick of his career. To add insult to injury, Alexander Nikishin, who was phenomenal the entire night, blasted one from the point to finish off a 5-1 victory to halt the Hurricanes' mini-skid.
Big nights for a pair of Manitoba-born Hurricanes
Before we talk about the big performance, Jordan Martinook deserves a ton of love. While he said post-game that he doesn't consider himself a Manitoban, his birth certificate says otherwise. Mark Jankowski plugged into the captain's spot tonight, and he made the pass between three Jets to find Martinook for the game-winner, stinging his provincial team.
However, the story of the night is Seth Jarvis. After scoring against the Jets last Friday, the Winnipeg native struck three times to record his second hat trick, both of which have come against Canadian teams. It wasn't just that he scored. It was the timeliness of his goals, breaking the ice late in the first and adding to the lead before the Jets could respond to Martinook's tally.
Brandon Bussi saved the game with a short-handed stop
Tied at one and on the power play early in the third period, this game almost had a completely different outlook. Logan Stankoven's pass hit a leg, allowing the Jets to get Kyle Connor alone against Brandon Bussi short-handed. While Bussi bit on the initial move, he wasn't so far out of position that he couldn't reach back with his pad to stone Connor, keeping it a 1-1 game.

The "BUS-SI" chants from the Lenovo Center crowd that followed were incredible. 👏 pic.twitter.com/xWYPk4CUnO
This was the moment that saved the Hurricanes tonight. Bussi faced just 13 shots. Three of them were breakaways, and only one beat him. It wasn't about the volume of his work, but the quality of it. Bussi is now the team's leader in wins, breaking his tie with Frederik Andersen to earn his sixth victory in seven starts. He has been an incredible find by the front office.
Additional Thoughts
The top guys were once again that for the Hurricanes. Andrei Svechnikov made up for his gaffe with a pair of helpers in the third period. Shayne Gostisbehere picked up two more assists. Sebastian Aho had an assist on the opening goal. Alexander Nikishin was rewarded for his incredible effort with a garbage-time goal in the final minute. The Canes got what they deserved, and then some.
It's a shame that Winnipeg's netminder, Thomas Milic, didn't get a complete buy-in from the group in front of him because he was outstanding for most of the night. The Hurricanes are not an easy team to make your NHL debut against, but he went toe-to-toe with them until the floodgates opened. Still, 30 saves in your NHL debut is nothing to be ashamed of.
Up Next: The Carolina Hurricanes put a bow on November when they welcome the Calgary Flames on Sunday night. The Flames earned a big victory in Sunrise tonight, beating the defending champions, 5-3. Once they face the Flames, the Hurricanes will get a three-day break to begin December. It's followed by three games in four nights, all of which are at the Lenovo Center.
