The Hurricanes keep it small, avoid making a massive deal before the deadline passes

Despite the rumors circulating about interest in several players, the Canes make a minor move, sending the team into the stretch run with a similar roster.

For months, we heard about the Carolina Hurricanes being interested in just about every available player on the planet. Rumors were non-stop about players the Canes could and should go after in a trade. With Friday being the last day to do so, the front office couldn't find the perfect deal to get it done, allowing the deadline to pass without much action.

The only move the Hurricanes made saw them add winger Nicolas Deslauriers from the Flyers for a conditional seventh-round pick in next season's draft. He's a very physical player who can throw his body around and fight when the moment needs it, though he won't score much. It's not a flashy move, but it's the move the team made.

Players like Vincent Trocheck, Nazem Kadri, and many more were thrown out there as good fits for the Hurricanes. However, the prices to get them were astronomical, especially with the other moves made around the league as lesser players brought unreasonably large returns. Clearly, the Canes were willing to budge, despite their best efforts.

While there might be a hole or two that would've been nice to fill for the stretch run, there's no reason for the Hurricanes to leverage their future, especially one that remains very bright in Raleigh. The Canes are the top team in the Eastern Conference at the moment, doing everything they've done despite the numerous injuries they faced earlier in the season.

Along with adding just one player to the roster, the Canes held onto Jesperi Kotkaniemi. He has been on the market for a while, and there was reportedly interest in him around the league, yet the Canes didn't find a new home for him. It opens the door for a potential move this summer, but Kotkaniemi will stick around for now.

Now, I understand the thought of liking your group, and I really do like this group. However, it does evoke shades of past deadlines, when the Canes didn't do much. It bit them hard in 2022, especially after Andrei Svechnikov's injury. They added Shayne Gostisbehere in 2023, but their offense stalled in the conference finals. Still, even in 2024 with Jake Guentzel, they fell in the second round.

I also think a big reason for the Hurricanes avoiding other areas, like a right-shot defenseman or a goalie, is because of the work they've done to lock up players for the next few years. They have Joel Nystrom in the AHL to call up if something happens, both this season and in the future. Not to mention Charles Alexis Legault is in Chicago, too.

For the league, as a whole, the 2026 trade deadline felt pretty underwhelming. I blame the high prices set for some of the premium players. The Canes pushed hard to get Trocheck back to Raleigh, but they weren't offering what New York wanted, killing any chances of it happening. If the asking price was anything like what St. Louis got for Brayden Schenn, I'm not too upset about it.

With the deadline gone, we know the team that the Carolina Hurricanes will ride into the postseason with, and it's nearly identical to the one they started the season with. Are they a perfect team? No, but the Eastern Conference has so many question marks right now that it's anyone's guess how it'll go. With the dust settling, the Canes remain one of the best in the conference after the deadline.
