It feels like every move that is made in the Eastern Conference this offseason, big or small, is taking direct aim at the Carolina Hurricanes. As the reigning Stanley Cup champions, the target sits on their back, and the rest of the conference isn't waiting until July 1 to get started. Sunday proved to be a very big day for the Florida Panthers, in particular.
They started the day by sending promising winger Mackie Samoskevich to the Seattle Kraken for the 25th pick in Friday's draft and a second-round pick in next year's draft. The 23-year-old is a pending restricted free agent, so the move helped the Panthers open a roster spot and gain a little draft capital. As many were quick to point out, it likely meant that something big was coming.
That "something big" turned out to be the first blockbuster of the offseason. The Panthers sent the 9th pick and their newly acquired 25th pick, along with their first-round pick in 2029 and a second-round pick in 2027, to the Ottawa Senators for their captain, Brady Tkachuk. After missing the playoffs this year, the Panthers are pushing all of their chips to the middle of the table.
In the aftermath of the deal, it was reported that Florida was one of four teams to which Tkachuk, who had a full no-movement clause in his contract, was willing to accept a trade to. This list also included Vegas, Minnesota, and Carolina. Tkachuk and the Senators were the first stepping stone for the Canes on their way to the Stanley Cup, holding him without a point in their opening-round sweep.
Carolina had the pieces to get a deal done, but there were two big things that likely hampered them from doing so. The first is a high draft pick. When you're giving up a player like Tkachuk, you hope to recoup something big for him, and the 9th overall pick in a deep draft, such as this, is important. Getting two in this deal means that Ottawa now has three first-round picks to go with the 32nd pick.
The second big thing is the familial connection. In case you forgot, though I highly doubt you did, the Florida Panthers currently have Matthew Tkachuk on their roster as well. As much as Minnesota, Vegas, or Carolina might have tried, it's pretty hard to compete in a race when one team has such a big advantage. The fact that the Panthers won the Stanley Cup in 2024 and 2025 helps, too.
We might know sometime in the future what the Hurricanes were willing to offer, or if they even put anything out there in the first place. Honestly, they never really stood much of a chance against the Panthers, though that might not be the worst thing in the world. There is plenty of baggage to unpack with both him and his brother, for a multitude of reasons.
While they haven't landed a big player yet, and the jury remains out on just how much they'll be doing this summer, that Carolina was on his list shows that the times really have changed. Winning will certainly help that. Maybe Brady Tkachuk wasn't the right fit for the Canes. Maybe there's another big player who is. At least the Hurricanes are in the conversation.
