As the banner is raised, the Hurricanes will open the new season against a hated foe

The 2026-27 Opening Night matchups were released on Wednesday, and of all the contests listed, there's a fight in Raleigh that is sure to turn some heads.

I guess I need to formally apologize to the NHL and the schedule makers. When pondering who the Carolina Hurricanes might open the season against, I declared that a Canes-Cats Opening Night tilt makes "way too much sense" and that this would be the exact reason that the league wouldn't want to do it. It turns out that the league might know a thing or two after all.

On Wednesday morning, the league dropped the Opening Night matchups for each of its 32 teams, with the Carolina Hurricanes set to open their season on Tuesday, September 29, at the Lenovo Center against the Florida Panthers. The game will begin at 5 pm with the Canes raising their Stanley Cup banner to the rafters, something that the Panthers are all too familiar with.

The Canes and the Panthers couldn't be having more opposite offseasons thus far. The Canes have been eerily quiet, with it feeling like something big will drop at any moment. Meanwhile, the Panthers have assembled one of the toughest lineups in the world. They shocked everyone by uniting the Tkachuk brothers. They've also re-signed Radko Gudas and traded for Garnet Hathaway.

The Panthers missed the playoffs last season, with their preseason injury to captain Aleksander Barkov setting the tone for a trying year for the two-time defending champs. As more bodies went down, the further out of the pack they fell. Along with their revamped lineup of punishers, the Panthers also made changes in the net, acquiring Jacob Markstrom to be their starter.

On the other side, the Hurricanes look like they'll return almost their entire roster from a season ago. Frederik Andersen is the only major loss at the moment. Otherwise, the group will be back together to celebrate a joyous moment and get the 2026-27 season started. The Panthers won two of the three games last year, but the Canes' win was a 9-1 pounding at the Lenovo Center in January.

This game on September 29 will not be the gauge as to whether the Hurricanes "earned" their Stanley Cup, no matter how much Florida fans and outsiders might declare that it is. The Panthers were dealt a tough hand last season, but they didn't make the playoffs. There is no asterisk to the Canes' championship win, and the result on that Tuesday night will not change that.

We're still over two-and-a-half months away from Opening Night, but we at least have a date that we can circle on the calendar and start counting down towards. We'll know more about the rest of the schedule when it is released, in its entirety, on Thursday. We'll get the full scale of the Canes' journey as they prepare to defend their title.
