The Hurricanes have played 13 games so far this season and are now 8-5-0 with their win against the Buffalo Sabres last night. Carolina is playing really great and the team is really coming together. We’ll talk a little bit about the Canes game against Buffalo in a minute BUT first we are going to pick up our series on WEATHER as we talk about LIGHTNING.

During a storm, tiny bits of rain, ice, or snow crash against each other inside storm clouds. All of those collisions create an electric charge. Eventually those charges clash so much they have to go somewhere and it comes down to the ground.

Lighting is very dangerous, and extremely hot. As much as 5 TIMES THE HEAT OF THE SUN!
WOW! That will cook a pizza fast. Maybe too fast even.

Because LIGHTNING is an electrical charge, it is very dangerous to be near water OR metals if there is LIGHTNING in the sky. If you are ever in a storm, you should get away from tall trees, or water. Certainly don’t have any metal around you if you can avoid it. Getting inside will be the safest thing for you to do.

If you will recall, we started talking about WEATHER because the Hurricanes were playing the Tampa Bay LIGHTNING, because of all the storms that happen in Florida. Especially in the summertime.
And while we are talking about hockey, let’s catch up with the Canes.
Thursday of last week, the Hurricanes played the New York Rangers in New York. Seth “Nap Time” Jarvis scored the only goal for the Canes, and they lost 2-1.

BUT things got better by Saturday when the Hurricanes took on the New York Islanders. They won in OVERTIME!! Free hockey is the best hockey for sure! Jalen “Chat-Man-Du” Chatfield scored his first goal of the season to start the scoring for the Canes. Then Dmytri Orlov scored his first goal of the season. Jesperi “KK” Kotkaniemi scored his 5th goal of the season to tie everything up. In overtime, Sebastian “Fishy” Aho scored the game winner!

The Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter was sick at home so he got to see a little bit of this game. He was so excited to get to stay up just a little bit past bedtime.

Last night the Canes played the Buffalo Sabres and WON! 3-2 in overtime! Martin Necas scored his second overtime game winner of the year! And did you see Antti Raanta? OH MY GOODNESS! He was playing great.

Carolina heads to Florida on Friday to play the Panthers and then….the Tampa Bay LIGHTNING!

This Week
Continuing our unit on WEATHER we learned about LIGHTNING. Lighting can be as much as 5 times hotter than the sun. It is caused by tiny bits of rain, ice, or snow crashing against each other inside storm clouds. All of those collisions create an electric charge. Eventually those charges clash so much they have to go somewhere and it comes down to the ground.

Next Week
We will talk more about weather when we talk to a special interviewee and catch up on the Hurricanes games!
