Kids Canes Reader, it’s October. Do you know what that means? Please! Tell me! That is R.I.G.H.T! IT IS HOCKEY SEASON! Carolina has already played 4 preseason hockey games and will play another one tomorrow. The regular season starts October 11th against the Ottawa Senators. Already, the Canes are playing awesome and looking like a championship team. One of those Hurricanes looking pretty great is Jesper “ Quickie ” Fast.

One of the names we mentioned in the article about the FIRST PRESEASON GAME was Noel Gunler. We mentioned he was from Sweden, and said we would talk more and Swedes on the Hurricanes. We’ll now is the time my fellow Kids Canes Caniacs.

Jesper ” Quickie ” Fast is from Nassjo, Sweden. He is the only Swede (someone from Sweden is called a Swede or Swedish) on the Carolina Hurricanes will likely be playing this regular season.

Sweden is a country in Europe that borders Finland (We have learned about Finland before), and Norway. Parts of Sweden are so far North of the Equator, that they have sunlight, or darkness for WHOLE DAYS! Can you imagine Seth “Naptime” Jarvis trying to take a nap when the sun is out at 5:00 at night?!?!

It also is very cold in Sweden, and most of the winter the many lakes, and ponds are frozen. Prime for skating and hockey!

There are spectacular light shows in northern Sweden known as the “aurora borealis,” or “northern lights.” The dazzling green or red lights, which fill the late night sky, are caused by collisions of tiny particles high in the Earth’s atmosphere.

The Capital of Sweden is Stockholm. Most of the people in Sweden work outside in the timber industry cutting down tree. But many people work at companies like Volvo making cars or IKEA making furniture.

Ok, let’s get back to the Carolina Hurricanes, hockey, and ” Quickie ” Fast. Jesper ” Quickie ” Fast has played ten seasons in the NHL. Three of those with the Hurricanes.

Last season, “Quickie” scored ten (10) goals and nineteen (19) assists during the season. He also scored a game winning goal to beat the New Jersey Devils in the playoffs last year….in overtime….and to win the series!!
BIG GOAL??? I THINK SO!

” Quickie ” Fast plays forward (remember: there are three forwards on the ice at a time, and forwards try to score) on what a lot of people call the “J Line.” The “J Line” is made up of Jordan Martinook, Jordan Staal, and Jesper ” Quickie ” Fast.

Any idea why they call it the “J Line?”

If you said it was because their names all start with “J” you would be CORRECT!

Give yourself a high five!

Before we wrap up, I wanted to let you know that we are going to try something new.
Each week we talk about a specific subject having to do with the Carolina Hurricanes or hockey in general. We also PREVIEW the subject for next week. We are going to doing a quick REVIEW of the previous week’s subject too.
