The puck has dropped on college hockey here in North Carolina. Week One saw blowouts, and close games alike. Here is a run down of the week.

The Mountaineers of Appalachian State faced the Demon Deacons of

Wake Forest

on the 8th in season openers for each team. App and Wake went into the third period tied at 2 but the Deacs added 2 late to cap the Mountaineers 4-3.

Wake Forest will be back in action next weekend as they travel to Virginia Tech on Friday September 15th and then pay a visit to the High Point University Panthers in Greensboro on the 16th.

Appalachian State jumped right back on the ice against Elon University on Saturday losing 7-4 . Their next game will be against the Pirates of East Carolina on September 15th.

High Point University opened the season at home against the UNC Tar Heels. HPU picked up goals from Joe DiMartino, Tyler Calkin, Walker Ripley, and 2 from JR Slayton.  UNC hits the road headed north for a road trip against The University of Delaware on the 15th and Rowan University on the 16th.

HPU then lost to UNC-W in the Seahawk’s home opener 5-4. The Panthers had scores from Garrett Escala, Nick Sasso and JR Slayton had 2 for HPU. Slayton’s goals were his 3rd and 4th on the year so far. The Panthers next play Wake Forest on the 16th in Greensboro, then Virginia Tech on the 22nd. UNC-W hosts Millersville University on the 16th in Wilmington.

North Carolina State opened the season with a sinking of the East Carolina University Pirates 17 to 3. Thomas McEneny and Garrett Auriene both had hat tricks for the Icepack. Aiden Brenner had back to back goals in the third as well to make it 11-3 then 12-3. ECU scored once in the first and twice in the second but NCSU kept the puck in the back of the net for most of the game.

NC State will face The University of Kentucky in Morrisville on Oct 16th. The ECU Pirates next face Appalachian State on Friday of this week (15th) in Greensboro, in what we are going to name “The Battle Of The Styles.” It’ll be a showdown between two hockey teams hungry for a win, AND between a tomato based, and vinegar based BBQ. Needless today, there will be a need for some napkins in Greensboro.

UNC-Charlotte has yet to play this year but they will start up on the 15th of this week with a game against the College of Charleston in Charleston on the 15th then face off again the Chanticleers of Coastal Carolina on the 16th.

We will keep on top of the college hockey scene here in North Carolina as the teams battle it out.  Each Sunday we will run down the scores and showcase college hockey here in Ye Olde North State.
