Everything you do has pros and cons. No matter how fun something might be, there is a little bit of some thing not as great about. Inversely, not everything that absolutely is terrible is completely awful. That goes for the folks that write here at Cardiac Canes. Here is what they said were the best things about writing here at CC and the worst things about covering Canes hockey.

Eli Strong-

Glenn Brewer

Ben Huffman- Being able to comb through the team’s history is what I enjoy the most about this job. History was always my favorite subject in school, so being able to do research on the Hurricanes and applying it to the current iteration of the team is fun for me. You get to unveil some obscure stats, crazy coincidences, and fun stories that help us remember the good times. Then, I get to proliferate that information to the masses and see their reactions to all of my hard work. It’s a very rewarding feeling when you finish something that you’re proud of. I absolutely hate long reviews. While it doesn’t happen often, sometimes you’ll get a review for goalie interference or a play that is barely offside that requires a long, drawn-out review process. It messes up the flow of the game. There needs to be a cap on how long they’re allowed to look at a play. I think they should last no more than two minutes. If you don’t have an answer by then, you stick with the original call and you move on. I’ll probably have to eat my words if a review like that goes against the Canes.

Harvey Ashner- Breaking into the sports industry has been intimidating for me. However, Cardiac Cane has given me a platform where I can use my voice. Given the space to contribute without those pressures has been nice.  I really enjoy the platform and experience it provides without being so demanding. The Hurricanes are a fun team and its been amazing to cover a team that gives you the tools to write about. Holding on to players that don’t add value or contribute consistently enough is my pet peeve. Some I get are investments, but we can’t hold onto potential forever. Not standing up for your teammates, I see it way too often where someone gets hit DIRTY and no one does jack about it. Its a bit frustrating, we need some cahonas and a backbone. Svech cant do it all and he’s had to step out of that role a bit. Need others to contribute and just add some toughness in general.

Keith Preston- There is a couple things I like about creating content. The biggest thing is the conversation it creates. The (usually) positivity is awesome, and hearing different thoughts, ideas, and perspectives is great. I feel it really helps me as a fan when I am watching this team on the ice. I loathed losing to the Panthers in the ECF.

Avery Thomas- Being a woman in a male-dominated industry and also being a neurodivergent one at that too. I’m the only woman on the Cardiac Cane staff so while I haven’t written as much due to work, I try to challenge myself and I want to stand out because I always want to give my best effort. I like that you don’t have to be super professional with CC because it’s so personable. You can add your own touch to your articles and showcase your personality through your writing, so you get to be your authentic self while maintaining Hurricanes accuracy and getting fans to keep reading. I do however, I’ve got more than one thing I could without: overpriced concessions at games (Who wants to pay $7-10 for beer and $15+ for food? Not me.), key players like Svech getting hurt right before the playoffs, and I’m with Keith on losing to the Panthers.

Chris Baker- My favorite, besides obviously working with these Caniacs, is writing the Kids Canes articles. That is a fun wrinkle I have made for myself. There is not a lot of people writing for Carolina Hurricanes fans of the junior variety. I like driving content their way so they have something to enjoy too. On the other had, I am over the disrespect this site gets. We have as talented and well thought out group of people writing with us as anywhere is in funditry. People like to kick sand our way but frankly they can all go right on marching. I would put this bunch of folks up next to anyone.
