We are getting closer to the hockey season Kids Cane Reader!! By the day! How excited are you? The Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter and I have been gearing up by playing a lot of floor hockey, and buy some hockey cards. Also in preparation (or getting ready) for the season we’ve been talking about the penalties in hockey that will land a Hurricane in the penalty box.

Last week we talked about TRIPPING, and SPEARING. TRIPPING is a minor penalty and will get a Cane 2 minutes in the box. SPEARING is a major no-no and lands a Hurricane in the penalty box for 5 minutes.

Today, we are going to talk about HOOKING and the biggest no-no of penalties FIGHTING.

HOOKING is when a Cane uses the blade of their stick to hook or grab onto a player on the other team. It slows the other player down with the puck or maybe to get to the puck. HOOKING is a minor penalty so, 2 minutes in the box.

The biggest of all major penalties is FIGHTING. FIGHTING is just want it sounds like. Two hockey players punching each other. A Hurricane can get 5 or even 10 minutes in the penalty box for FIGHTING. If it is really bad, they can be thrown out of the game. FIGHTING just isn’t good for lots of reasons, but maybe the biggest reason is that it often hurts both players.

FIGHTING can lead to concussions, which are a serious injury for anyone. And hockey players hurt their hands FIGHTING as well. They need their hands to hold their stick right??? Why would they want to hurt their hands?? It doesn’t make much sense to me.

Remember Kids Cane Reader, if the Carolina Hurricanes have a player in the penalty box, they have to keep playing. If a Hurricane gets a 5 or even 10 minute major penalty for FIGHTING that means the Canes are without a player for a very, very long time. So why fight?

Penalties happen through hockey games, and when they do, it gives one team a POWER PLAY, and the other team is missing a skater from the ice.

Kids Canes Challenge Answer:

We have read about several of the different major and minor penalties in a hockey game. This week we read about HOOKING which is a minor penalty. Its when a player uses their stick to slow down the other team’s player. You only get 2 minutes in the penalty box for HOOKING. FIGHTING on the other hand is a major penalty. A Hurricane that fights can get 5, or 10 minutes in the box for FIGHTING. They can even get kicked out of the game. Fighting is so dangerous because it hurts both players and it means one team gets a POWER PLAY for a long time. It puts your team on the PENALTY KILL for a long time too.

In just the last little bit of this article, you have read the terms POWER PLAY and PENALTY KILL. Do you know what a either or both of those are?
