Hey there Kids Canes reader! The “Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter” and I read a hockey book this weekend that we checked out from the library that was AWESOME! It was called “GOOD NIGHT HOCKEY” and it is by Michael Dahl. In it, a hockey player scores a HAT TRICK.

What do you know?!?!

Our Kids Canes challenge from the last article asked if you knew what a HAT TRICK was.

Have you heard the term HAT TRICK? Do you know where it came from?

I knew what one was, but I didn’t know where it came from either. I had to look it up!

The term HAT TRICK comes to hockey from the sport of Cricket…not the chirpy little green things.

Way back in the past, a player on a cricket team scored three wickets in a single game.

Everyone in the crowd was so excited, they took up a collection to buy the player a new hat!

Sooner or later, the term HAT TRICK got attached to scoring three of something in a game.

IN HOCKEY, A HAT TRICK IS WHEN A PLAYER SCORES THREE GOALS IN ONE GAME!

Today, many Hurricanes fans celebrate a HAT TRICK not by buying a player a new hat, but by throwing their own hats on the ice!

I got to see Sebastian “Fishy” Aho score a HAT TRICK last year and you know what? I threw my brand new Carolina Hurricanes hat on the ice. I was that excited!

PNC Arena (where the Hurricanes play) just erupts with excitement when a Carolina Hurricane scores three goals in one game! The hats being thrown on the ice! Everyone cheering loudly! The goal horn going off so loud you think it will break!

It is just sooooo exciting!

8 times last year a Carolina Hurricane scored three (3) goals in a single game!

“Fishy” Aho scored 3 of those alone! Seth “Nap Time” Jarvis had a HAT TRICK too! So did Jordan “Marty Party” Martinook.

HAT TRICKS are so hard to score, because scoring just one goal is hard enough in a game.

Much less three!

Kids Canes Answer:

In the last Kids Canes Challenge, we asked if you knew what a HAT TRICK was. In this article we learned that WHEN A PLAYER SCORES THREE GOALS IN ONE GAME it is called a HAT TRICK! We celebrate by cheering, the goal horn going off and of course throwing our hats on the ice!

THEY ARE SO EXCITING!

Kids Canes Challenge:

The Hurricanes scored 8 HAT TRICKS last season. How many goals would that be?
