Kids Canes: The American Hockey League and The Chicago Wolves
In our article about goalie Yaniv “Perethead” Perets we wrote that “Perethead” Perets would probably play with the Carolina Hurricanes’ AHL team. Today, we are going to talk about the American Hockey League or A.H.L. We are also going to learn about opposites. Can you think of some opposites? And do you know what the A.H.L is already?
The A.H.L.
The American Hockey League or A.H.L was formed back in 1938.
Currently the A.H.L has 32 divided into 4 divisions.
But what does this have to do with the N.H.L or National Hockey League?
Both leagues are made up of professional hockey players.
We are going to talk more about what a professional is, so hang on to that idea.
But that means the hockey players get paid to play hockey. How much fun would that be??
The difference is, teams in the A.H.L and N.H.L do not play AGAINST each other.
A team from the American Hockey League would never play a team from the National Hockey League.
A.H.L and N.H.L teams play FOR each other. The are not opposites. Just different.
Teams in the N.H.L and A.H.L cheer for each other. If a player is playing well in the American Hockey League, they might get to play in the National Hockey League.
The Carolina Hurricanes And Chicago Wolves
The Carolina Hurricanes had an A.H.L team called the Chicago Wolves. The Mascot is “Skates” the Wolf.
Our “Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter” has a signed picture of Skates on his wall. Skates is pretty cool!
Seth “Nap Time” Jarvis, Stefan “Nosey” Noesen, and Jalen “Chat-man-du” Chatfield have all played for the Wolves, and the Hurricanes.
When you read about Yaniv “Perethead” Perets, you read he was hired by the Carolina Hurricanes, but he might play in the American Hockey League.
Right now, no one is sure if the Chicago Wolves will play for the Carolina Hurricanes, OR if the Hurricanes will get another team to play for them.
The Canes might get a new A.H.L team to play for them.
If they do, we will let you know so you can cheer for them.
If you want to keep cheering for the Chicago Wolves, you can!
Opposites.
Earlier we read about the A.H.L. and N.H.L. We read the word PROFESSIONAL.
A professional is someone who is paid to do a job.
That could be anything from driving a trash truck, to playing hockey. Lawyers, librarians, engineers, and your teachers at school are professionals.
Even taking care of Kids Canes readers like you is a job.
But the opposite of PROFESSIONAL is AMATEUR.
An amateur is someone who does a job but does not get paid.
Sometimes people do things because they enjoy them and do not get paid.
Amateurs play hockey for fun.
Professionals like A.H.L and N.H.L players are paid, but they do have fun too!
Just like UP is the opposite of DOWN, FOR is the opposite of AGAINST, AMATEUR and PROFESSIONAL are opposites.
The A.H.L and N.H.L are not opposites, just different.
Kids Canes Challenge:
What are people from the country of Finland called?
Kids Canes Answer:
We asked where Quinnipiac University is located.
Quinnipiac University is in Hamden, Connecticut. It was founded in 1929. It is where Yaniv “Perethead” Perets and Skyler Brind’Amour went to college. You might know Skyler Brind’Amour as the son of Rod Brind’Amour the coach of the Carolina Hurricanes.
