Well Kids Canes readers, the Hurricanes season came to a sad ending, but there is excitement for next season already. Will the Canes trade any players between seasons? Who will they trade? One new player the Hurricanes have already hired to play goalie is Yaniv “Perethead” Perets.
We are going to get to “Perethead” Perets, and some math later in the article, but first, let’s talk about the game in Florida.
Season Ending
The Canes lost in the last seconds to the Florida Panthers. This meant it was the last game of the season.
The final score was 4-3. It was SO CLOSE!
Jesper “Quickie” Fast, Paul “Stast” Stastny, and Teuvo “Turbo” Teravainen all scored a goal for the Canes.
For all three, that was their first goal in four games against Florida.
“Turbo” Teravainen had not played much of the playoffs because he was hurt. His goal was his first of the playoffs too.
It was a tough way to lose, but there is always next year!
And there is some excitement already!
New Goalie
The Canes hired a new goalie!
His name is Yaniv “Perethead” Perets.
He just finished a hockey season at Quinnipiac University playing for the Bobcats.
“Perethead” Perets and the Bobcats won a National Championship in hockey last year.
Last year for the Bobcats, “Perethead” Perets had a Goals Against Average or GAA of 1.49.
That means that for every game he played, he only gave up 1 and a half goals.
We will talk more about that in a minute
Here is a highlight video of Yaniv “Perethead” Perets
“Perethead” Perets will probably not play for the Carolina Hurricanes, but will play in the AHL. The AHL is a hockey league that is almost as good as the NHL but not quite.
Carolina had an AHL team called the Chicago Wolves.
Their mascot is named “Skates” The Wolf.
My buddy, “The Most Junior Hurricanes Reporter” got an autograph from “Skates” and it is hanging on his wall.
We’ll talk more about the AHL in a future article, so remember what it is!
“Perethead” Perets will be a good addition to the Carolina Hurricanes’ AHL team.
He does not give up many goals, and his team, the Bobcats, won the National Championship.
Math Time
Remember we said Yaniv “Perethead” Perets had a GAA that was 1.49 or almost 1 and a half goals?
You might be asking, how does a goalie allow a “half goal”?
Good question!
It has to do with his GAA or Goals Against Average
To get a GAA, you take all of the time a goalie plays and divide it by the number of goals they allow.
Sometimes, the math means that you get “half a goal.”
Silly right?!?!?
The lower a goalie’s GAA is, the fewer goals the goalie allows in a game.
A goalie with a GAA of 1.49, like “Perethead” Perets, is very good!
But if a goalie had a GAA of 9.50 that would be very bad.
It would mean the goalie allowed almost 10 goals a game!
No one wants that!
Kids Canes Challenge:
Where is Quinnipiac University?
Kids Canes Answer:
We asked, “What is a hurricane, and do you have hurricanes where you are?”
A hurricane is a storm much like a thunderstorm. Usually, there is a lot of rain, and the wind can blow very hard. They can be scary, but most of the time no one gets hurt, so don’t be scared.
Hurricanes happen near the ocean, but sometimes hurricanes come far away from the beach.
This is what a hurricane looks like from space. Does it look familiar?
