Carolina Hurricanes: Takeaways from 8th Win In a Row
The Carolina Hurricanes extended their torrid winning streak to 8 games last night against the Red Wings in Detroit. The Canes are now top of the Discover Central Division, top of the NHL, and the first team in the NHL to win 20 games this season (at the time of writing).
20 wins in 27 games. This honestly is surreal to me.
The Carolina Hurricanes have been on fire this season, and there are no signs of them slowing down or stopping anytime soon. This winning streak is the best winning streak the Canes have mustered since the 2008-09 season, and I have a feeling they’ll keep it going.
Last night’s game was equal parts frustrating, satisfying, and downright infuriating.
The 1st period was mostly boring, and the 2nd period was mostly the same, aside from Dougie Hamilton‘s first career shorthanded goal.
The 3rd period, however, is where all the action started.
The Red Wings put shot after shot on goal, all of which Alex Nedeljkovic stopped, except for one that bounced off of Sebastian Aho‘s skate and into the net with roughly 9 seconds remaining in the game.

A bad bounce and a slightly out of position player ruined Ned’s shot at his 2nd NHL shutout, which was maddeningly frustrating, considering Ned stood on his head all game, and gave us all more reasons as to why he should be the Carolina Hurricanes’ starting netminder going forward.
Luckily, Nino Niederreiter had blasted a puck by Red Wing’s goaltender Jonathan Bernier before then to secure the Carolina Hurricanes’ win and extend their winning streak to a franchise-best 8 games.
Morgan Geekie and Steven Lorentz were, yet again, standouts despite being held off the score sheet. In my opinion, Geekie and Lorentz have made Warren Foegele and Jordan Martinook expendable on the ice, so we’ll see how that shapes up for them for the rest of the season.
For now, though, let’s all enjoy this winning streak and see how far the Carolina Hurricanes can take it. I think they’ve got it in them to push it beyond 10; we’ll see if I’m right soon enough.
