The Carolina Hurricanes absolutely demolished the Pittsburgh Penguins earlier today by a score of 6-2. Here’s what happened.

Welp, I don’t think any of us were expecting a win that big over the Pittsburgh Penguins but, hey, we’ll take it!

This afternoon’s matchup was insane, and easily one of the best games the Carolina Hurricanes have played all season.

This is exactly the kind of game they need to play going forward, and exactly the kind of momentum they need to build against Metropolitan Division teams.

The Carolina Hurricanes FINALLY got scoring from their depth players, and look what happened?! Justin Williams extended his goal streak to 4 games by scoring twice in the 3rd period.

Recent call-up, and noted NHL-ready stud Morgan Geekie scored twice, and notched an assist in his NHL debut. As I mentioned in my keys to the game article, Geekie should make an impact almost immediately. Look. What. Happened?!

In my keys to the game article, I mentioned that the Carolina Hurricanes should score first. Did they? Nope. But, trends and historical data be damned, they still won the game anyways.

I also mentioned the defense, and how they needed to find some level of solid consistency, and I think they built on what they established against the New York Islanders yesterday. The effort and consistency in the defensive end was much better, and relatively solid compared to what we’ve seen from them lately.

My last key was regarding Morgan Geekie, but we already talked about him. Geekie became just the second player in Whalers/Hurricanes history to record 3 points in an NHL debut; the first was Dan Bourbonnais in the 1981-1982 season with the Hartford Whalers.

Morgan Geekie fit right in, and plays Rod Brind’amour‘s style of hockey the way Rod Brind’amour wants it to be played. His skating leaves a bit to be desired, but his offensive IQ and general hockey sense is more than enough to make up for it, as evidenced earlier today.

Not to be taken lightly, if that is at all possible when you’re looking at putting up 3 points in your NHL debut, but Geekie managed to do all of this when lined up against Evgeni Malkin and his line for most of the night.

This is no small task, and if Geekie continues to play like this, we could see him up with the Carolina Hurricanes for good this season. He seems to be exactly what the Carolina Hurricanes need right now, and I am HERE. FOR. IT.
