With the 2020 NHL All-Star Weekend done let’s take a look at one of the newer members of the Carolina Hurricanes and a future all-star to come, Martin Necas.
Let’s take a minute and rewind to the 2018-2019 Carolina Hurricanes season. Martin Necas has made the opening night roster and plays the first seven games with the Canes in October before being sent back down to the Charlotte Checkers for multiple reasons.
In his 7 games played in the big league though, he manages to get one goal and one assist. Many Caniacs (including myself) were sad to see him go after just seven games, especially with him knotting his first NHL goal in his last game.
Now let’s fast-forward to January 25th 2020. The Carolina Hurricanes are more than halfway through the NHL season and Martin Necas has managed to notch 27 points in 46 games (12 goals and 15 assists) and is on pace for 44.66 points considering he plays every game the rest of the season.
Let’s not forget though, Necas joined the Canes this season coming off of a Calder Cup Championship from last season with the Charlotte Checkers and this championship seems to have boosted up his potential even more.
When watching Martin Necas play, the thing that stands out most to viewers is his speed. The way he can accelerate through a crowd of players just to get the puck on his stick is really impressive, especially for a 21 year old up-and-coming rookie.
When the Carolina Hurricanes faced-off against the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night (1/21), Necas scored a beautiful goal early in the 1st period that was nothing short of effortless:
It’s plays like these and hustles on the ice that really make Necas stand out against opponents.
The Dzingel-Haula-Necas line, though currently broken up, has continued to be one of the Canes best lines this season. The amount of chemistry and awareness that the three have together really stand out when they are on the ice.
At the moment, I don’t see any reason why Martin Necas wouldn’t be a future NHL All-Star. With him being only 21 years old and playing the kind of hockey that he currently is, the only direction I see him going is up.
I can picture him now in the Fastest Skater competition in the NHL All-Star SuperSkills boosting around the ice at the speed of light to win the competition, as well as him hustling down the ice to get a breakaway in the All-Star game and scoring yet another “effortless” goal.
It is only Martin Necas’s first full season here in the NHL but boy is he making a name for himself. At the moment, he tends to fly under the radar of many NHL fans who don’t know who he is yet but that will certainly change in the years to come.
Question for CC Readers: What do you think about Martin Necas and what he brings to this team? Do you think he could be a future NHL All-Star?
