Recap: The Carolina Hurricanes Amazing Road Trip Through Canada

Collecting 9 out of 10 points is quite amazing, and gives the Carolina Hurricanes needed momentum to continue winning.

WOW, what a trip! This trip was a huge test for the Carolina Hurricanes, playing five straight away games, and the Canes come out on top. Despite losing in OT to Vancouver, a strong team on the rise, the Canes collected 9 out of 10 possible playoff points in the standings. This will hold the Canes at the #3 seed in the Metro for now, a place where the Canes can control their own destiny.

This road trip was quite the team affair with 15 different players scoring a point, and 11 of them having multiple points. Most notably, Sebastian Aho had 5 goals and 2 assists, Dougie Hamilton had 2 goals and 4 assists, and Teuvo Teravainen had 6 assists.

Hockey, like basketball, is a game of runs. Would this road streak have been possible without beating the sharks in a shootout and then demolishing the Wild at home? Probably not. That one is on you Caniacs, you brought the noise and the atmosphere for the boys to win at home, and it lead to winning on the road.

1. Edmonton Oilers: W 6-3

The first four minutes of this game in all honesty, Edmonton looked better. They were faster, and better on the forechecking. A single bead of sweat ran down the brow, until 4:16 into the first when Aho found the back of the net.

A deep breath was resealed from every Caniac around the world, but it wasn’t over. The Canes pounded hard in the first to make it 3-0 at the intermission. Then McDavid and company fought back. tieing the game at 3-3 early in the third.

And then the MARTY PARTY happens as Jordan Martinook scores the eventual game winner. Aho and Hamilton also found the net later in the third as the Canes sealed the deal.

That’s 2 more playoff points, a win on the road, But wait! There’s more, the Canes can’t be stopped.

2. The Vancouver Canucks: (OT)L 0-1

You want to talk about heartbreak, this is heartbreak. Petr Mrazek Stands on his head all game for the Canes and don’t get the win. Petr Probably felt worse than when your ex thinks y’all might get back together but you never do.

Mrazek did this 25 times in regulation, but comes up with the loss in OT. This one stung, but not like normal. There were some positives to come from Vancouver.

Defense was sharp and didn’t let up at the end of the game like they did in Boston. The boys never quit, which you certainly can’t do on the road like this.

Yes the goal from Aho should have been a goal. There was no possession from the Canucks to blow the play dead. But look at it this way, the Canes were robbed and still secured a point in the standings. But you could tell the team wasn’t pleased, they were hungry. And boy did they eat next game.

3. The Calgary Flames: W 4-0

What a response! While the Canes get a point being shut out, they turn around and shut out a Calgary team that had been on a seven game win streak.

A scoreless first was not a terrible outcome. Calgary had been so hot, to make it out of the first with neither team scoring was quite an accomplishment. This allowed the Canes to go back to doing their thing. Scoring, and winning.

Well known fishing buddies Jordan Martinook and Brock McGinn, linked up for the first goal to start the downfall of Calgary. And then Dougie sees this happen and I’m sure said something like “I wanna score too guys!” So he did. Hamilton found the back of the net, then Foegele did twice, short handed, in the third.

What a way to bounce back. While the win streak was starting fresh, the point streak was still going. And that isn’t stopping for any time soon.

4. Winnipeg Jets: W 6-3

Just another road game right? Just looking for the next two points, a W, no need to re-write the history books again right? WRONG. Andrei Svechnikov does it again!

NO GOALIE IS SAFE WITH SVECHNIKOV BEHIND THE NET!! Svechnikov became the first and second player to ever complete “The Michigan” now known as “The Svech” in an NHL game. And for he second time this season Svechnikov broke the internet. Nobody is safe.

The exciting thing is, this wasn’t the only amazing thing to happen that night. Aho and Staal were both on hat trick watch in the third period, and by far the Canes came out faster than they ever have this season. Speed, good passes and clean entries for the entire game. The Canes had found their groove and playing very pretty hockey.

All around this game was not only fun to watch but important to see for fans. If this Hurricanes unit that showed up and showed out in Winnipeg shows up in 2020, there could be a return of Lord Stanley’s Cup to Raleigh NC.
