You’re a wizard, Sebastian Aho. Sometimes it seems like it the way he plays. To get everyone in the mood for October, lets put Carolina Hurricanes players in Hogwarts houses.

The start of the Carolina Hurricanes season is drawing near. I know this is North Carolina and it still feels like summer, and the heat index keeps rising. Seeing as how it is technically Fall, let’s all go back to school. Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, to be exact. Quidditch and hockey are in the same level of pure awesomeness, but unfortunately hockey can’t be played on broomsticks.

The owls have all been sent and your Carolina Hurricanes have all been selected to attend Hogwarts. Each player made their purchases at Diagon Alley for spell books, ropes, wands, etc. The Sorting Hat is all set to place your favorite players into the respective houses.

Put on your house colors, or your handmade lettered jumper, grab yourself a butterbeer, some treats from the trolley, and find out which players will join you at your Hogwarts house table.

Jordan Staal was in beast mode at the end of the season and during the playoffs. This year’s captain is an obvious shoe-in for Gryffindor.  Like a true Gryffindor, he showed the passion he has for this Carolina Hurricanes team. His play in game seven against the Washington Capitals pushed the team to knock off the defending Stanley Cup champions.

Brock McGinn, another Weasley, the Sorting hat knows exactly what to do with you! With all joking aside, McGinn shows us why he is a Gryffindor. Think about all the times he stood up for his fellow teammates, and who can forget the biggest goal of his career in Game 7 against the Washington Capitals last season.

Sebastian Aho – I remember watching one game in a season past, and I noticed how much he hates to lose. Aho puts pride in this team, he wants nothing more than to push them for many years of playoffs and, hopefully, more than a few championships.

Trevor van Riemsdyk – there is a part of me that believes the Carolina Hurricanes would not have been swept in the Eastern Conference Finals last season if Trevor was not injured.

New addition to the team, Ryan Dzingel is also one of my picks to be in Gryffindor for Hogwarts this year for the Carolina Hurricanes. The day he landed in Raleigh for the very first time as a Hurricane, he met with Billy, got a workout in, and immediately showed pride in his new team and new home. Now, to highlight the Bunch of Jerks who would be in Slytherin.

Jordan Martinook – what can I say about our new alternate captain? He is charismatic. He is a leader in the room. He will lead us all to a Marty Party, and use that ambition to a deep run in the playoffs. One of the reasons why he would be in the Slytherin house at Hogwarts.

Warren Foegele – during training camp last season, Foegele gave Rod Brind’Amour no choice but to keep him on the Carolina Hurricanes roster. He played with determination to be part of the team. He also became public enemy number one to all Capitals fans!

Julien Gauthier – like Foegele last season, Gauthier is making Brind’Amour’s decision to trim the roster difficult. Whatever he learned last season during the Charlotte Checkers Calder Cup run and win must have stuck with him. He wants to use his talents with the Carolina Hurricanes, not the Checkers, and it has shown this preseason.

Nino Niederreiter – had something to prove after being traded from Minnesota last season. The Wild was not the proper fit for his talents. His production made most Carolina fans want to send their condolences to them as he scored 30 points in 36 regular season games with the Carolina Hurricanes.

New additions for the team, Joel Edmundson is my pick to be in Slytherin for the Hurricanes this season. Edmundson is a big, shutdown style defenseman who isn’t afraid to throw his body around when he needs to. Now, moving on to the Hufflepuffs.

Haydn Fleury spent last season between the Checkers and Hurricanes, mostly to make sure he was getting playing time. He did not complain about his frequent flyer miles. He just took the time to learn how to craft his game, and has been described in the past as a ‘happy-go-lucky kind of kid’.

Teuvo Teravainen – there is just something about Teravainen that screams Hufflepuff to me. It could be his affable nature, his strong friendship with fellow Finn Sebastian Aho, or his ability to fit in wherever Brind’amour puts him in the lineup. Regardless, Teuvo is the definition of a Hufflepuff.

Jaccob Slavin – do not let the way he plays defense fool you; Slavin is a Hufflepuff. He is hard working and shows penultimate patience with the puck. Let’s not forget his two Hufflepuff pups (say that three times fast) that will also be fan favorites at Hogwarts.

Brett Pesce – Carolina Hurricanes fans knows how much of a beast line both Slavin and Pesce are on defense. The NHL might not point it out as often as the should, but shhh no one but the hurricanes fans needs to know. Coupled with his deceptively elite style of play, Pesce is as friendly and personable as they come off the ice.

New addition for the team, Erik Haula is my pick for this team to be in Hufflepuff for the Hurricanes. He has been a fan favorite with every team he’s played for, and for good reason. Haula is an excellent teammate to have in the locker room, and an even better teammate to have on the ice. Last, but certainly not least, on to the Ravenclaws.

Petr Mrazek and James Reimer – there is a certain amount of craziness to want to be a NHL goalie. Almost a Luna Lovegood amount of craziness. (I am saying this with nothing but respect; every Harry Potter character quiz I take, I always get Luna!) With that being said, along with a touch of craziness, there is a certain intelligence it takes to be a NHL goaltender. No matter what, you always have to be focus on the game, and make sure your mind is sharp at all times.

Lucas Wallmark plays the game the way Brind’Amour wants. For the Checkers, he was always the playmaker, but put in good shifts on the penalty kill as well. I believe he sees the game in a way most players does not. With his first NHL season under his belt, I can see more of his playmaking ability, as well as his hockey IQ, on display.

Dougie Hamilton – if the power play is going to click this year, it will be because of Hamilton. He played well after his injury healed from the beginning of the season, I can see him blossoming into our go-to powerplay quarterback this year.

Andrei Svechnikov – I have to admit, I was on the fence on which Hogwarts house to put Svechnikov into. Part of me wanted to put him in Slytherin, but it just didn’t quite fit. I finally decided on Ravenclaw after one ultimate factor; Rod Brind’Amour. I can see Rod teaching Svechnikov not only to use his talents, but to think the game as well. Svechnikov has an unparalleled hockey IQ for his age, and is going to be a point-scoring machine before long.

New additions to the team, Jake Gardiner is my pick to be in Ravenclaw for the Hurricanes this season. Gardiner is also a probable candidate for becoming a ‘powerplay quarterback’, which requires great offensive and defensive skill, alongside a vast hockey IQ.

So, there you have it, Caniacs! Your Carolina Hurricanes, sorted into their houses within the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Don Waddell gets an honorable mention as Albus Dumbledore, considering the skill in wizardry he has shown in the various dealings he has made since becoming the Carolina Hurricanes’ GM.
