Seeing who the Carolina Hurricanes will bring out to sound the siren at home games is a highlight of the night for fans. Who should they try to get to sound it this upcoming season?

Seeing who the Carolina Hurricanes will get to sound the siren is always a highlight of the night for the fans. Some notable past sounders have included Russel Wilson, Dale Earnhardt Jr, and one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, Ric Flair. But who should the Hurricanes look to bring out to sound it this upcoming season?

Before we get into the list, I have a few honorable mentions to get out of the way.

Sara Civian

Ah yes, the Queen of Hurricanes Twitter. Sara is a staff writer for The Athletic Carolina and covers the Hurricanes. And personally, is one of my favorite writers. Plus, maybe this kind of exposure will help her finally get that White Claw sponsorship.

Jim Cantore

This one literally writes itself. Jim Cantore has been with The Weather Channel since 1986. He is best known for his coverage of severe weather, especially hurricanes. It would be an absolute delight to see them bring him out. Seeing arguably the most well known meteorologist sound the Hurricane Siren would be sure to garner a few laughs as well.

Cam Newton

Honestly, I don’t have much to say to say about this one. I’m surprised it hasn’t happened already. Cam was the number 1 overall draft pick back in 2011 by the Carolina Panthers. He’s been the face of that franchise since he walked in. He’s a former NFL MVP and lead the Panthers to an appearance in Super Bowl 50.

Now that we have those out of the way, let’s look at who I think the Hurricanes should bring out this season.

Emilia Clarke

Daenerys of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regent of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.

Emilia Clarke, 32, is an Emmy nominated actress who is best known for her portrayal of Daenerys Targaryen on HBO’s behemoth of a hit TV show, Game of Thrones. She is originally from London in the United Kingdom. She went to school at the Drama Centre in London and has starred in many plays, as well as multiple movies.

While she doesn’t have any ties to North Carolina like many past siren sounders have had, it would be cool to see the Canes bring her out. It would obviously get the crowd pumped up hearing the siren, but it would also be a pleasure for fans of the show, like myself, to see one of the actresses from the show that brought us so much joy and emotional trauma. Announcing that a big name like her is going to make an appearance at a game would for sure draw in more people.

If the Hurricanes really wanted to go all in on this, they could have Emilia sound the siren on a Game of Thrones night. Complete with custom Thrones-themed merchandise, food, and maybe even the sweet prince Hamilton the Pig in a dragon costume.

The Canes bringing her out will also send a message to the opposing team that we will take what is ours with fire and blood! (Sorry not sorry).

Onto someone mythical.

Rhett and Link

The hosts of the hit YouTube morning show Good Mythical Morning, Rhett McLaughlin and Charles Lincoln “Link” Lamont would be great fits to sound the siren for the Hurricanes.

Now I could go into great detail about their ties to the state, but here’s a very short version (that you can read more about in their amazing book, The Book of Mythicality): Rhett and Link and from Buies Creek, North Carolina which is home to Campbell University. They are also engineering graduates from North Carolina State University.

They started Good Mythical Morning in January 2012, and at the time of writing this article, sits at 15,658,052 subscribers, have over 5 billion (!!!!!!) total views, and have released over 1,500 videos. The after show, Good Mythical More, began in late 2013 and currently is just shy of 4 million subscribers. They also have their YouTube Red show, Rhett and Link’s Buddy System, which aired on the video-sharing platform for 2 seasons. They brought their stage show to the 2018 North Carolina State Fair and performed to a sold out crowd.

Rhett and Link are two extremely funny guys and they would for sure bring a unique and entertaining spin on their time sounding the siren. And with their YouTube presence, this could open up some opportunities for some fun skits with the Hurricanes staff, players, and fans. And possibly a guest appearance by a couple players on their show.

Now it’s time for some music.

Between The Buried And Me

This one may come out of left field for some people. But any chance I get to talk about one of my favorite bands, I’m taking it.

For those that haven’t heard of Between The Buried And Me, here’s a quick rundown of them. They are a progressive-metal band that formed in 2000 and are from Raleigh. The band currently consists of Tommy Giles Rodgers Jr. on lead vocals and keyboards, Paul Waggoner on lead guitar and backing vocals, Dan Briggs on bass and keyboards, Blake Richardson on drums, and Dustie Waring on rhythm/lead guitar.

They have been signed with Metal Blade Records since 2011; before that, they were signed to Victory Records. Between both labels, they have released 9 albums with the most recent ones, Automata I and Automata II, coming out in March and July 2018. The track Condemned to the Gallows from Part 1 scored a Grammy nomination for best heavy metal performance at the 2019 Grammy Awards.

The band has not been shy about acknowledging their North Carolina roots in the past. They have released merchandise based on that of the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte Hornets in the past. They also played to a sold out crowd of hometown fans at the 2018 North Carolina State Fair as well. So coming out and sounding the siren for the Hurricanes wouldn’t be a problem for them if they were available to do it. It would just be if the Hurricanes wanted to step out of the box a bit and bring them in.

Now onto one of the greatest ever.

Mike Krzyzewski

Mike Krzyzewski is arguably the greatest coach in the history of college basketball, and needs no introduction but I’m going to give him one anyway.

Coach K has been the Head Coach of the Duke University men’s basketball team since 1990. He has led the Blue Devils to 12 ACC regular season titles, 15 ACC tournament championships, 12 Final Four appearances, and 5 NCAA National Championships. He has the most wins by any coach in college basketball history.  He has numerous coaching awards. Oh, and 3 Olympic gold medals.

He’s coached Duke basketball greats ranging from Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, Zion Williamson, my favorite JJ Reddick, and of course the man who hit THE SHOT, Christian Latiner.

He, along with honorable mention Cam Newton, is someone I’m surprised the Hurricanes haven’t brought out to sound the siren at a home game before. But good things come to those who wait. And for them to bring him out would be sure to blow the roof off of PNC Arena.

Plus, we live for college basketball in North Carolina. I mean, if the ACC tournament wasn’t being shown on every TV in your school, are you even from here?

The Hurricanes like to bring people out that have ties to North Carolina. So, what better person to bring out than the mastermind behind one of the greatest college basketball programs in history than Coach K?

Now for that we’ve discussed the G.O.A.T, it’s time to talk about The Man.

Becky Lynch

The King of Queens. Becky Two Belts. The Man. Becky Lynch.

2018 Sports Illustrated women’s wrestler of the year. 2018 CBS Sports wrestler of the year. 1 time, and current, RAW Women’s Champion. 3 time (and inaugural) Smackdown Women’s Champion. 2019 Women’s Royal Rumble winner. Winner of the first ever women’s Wrestlemania main event. The list goes on.

Becky Lynch, real name Rebecca Quinn, is from Dublin, Ireland. She is a professional wrestler currently signed with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).  She’s been wrestling since mid-2002. She was trained by Fergal Devitt, who is more commonly known by his WWE ring name Finn Balor and old New Japan Pro Wrestling (NJPW) name, Prince Devitt. She stopped wrestling in 2006 after a severe head injury, and didn’t return until late 2012; Lynch signed with WWE in 2013.

She’s one of the biggest draws the company has right now. And since Summer Slam 2018, has been one of the hottest wrestlers the company has seen since the tail end of CM Punk’s stint in WWE from 2011 to his exit in 2014.

Lynch has history with the NHL. She’s appeared for the New Jersey Devils in the past alongside the likes of Daniel Bryan and others. But it’s time that she comes to the loudest house in the NHL. A perfect time to bring her in would be whenever WWE is running shows in Charlotte, Raleigh, or Greensboro.
