The 2019 NHL Awards Ceremony presented many players with awards and trophies for their efforts in the 18-19 NHL season. Who walked off with new Hardware and who was snubbed?
The NHL Awards Ceremony is the yearly event where the best of the best get recognized for their individual achievements. Justin Williams has been nominated this year for Mark Messier award this year for outstanding leadership. Will he walk away tonight with some extra hardware? Let’s find out together.
Kenan Thompson is hosting tonight and has already won over the crowd and called out Gary Bettman, the Sharks, and even the Stanley Cup Champion Blues. He already gave a wonderful shoutout to the Carolina Hurricanes and the STORM SURGE! Which earned a standing ovation from the Captain of the Hurricanes, Justin Williams.
Calder Cup: Elias Pettersson
The first award, the Calder Cup, was awarded to Elias Pettersson. While many speculated that Carolina Hurricanes rookie forward and second overall pick, Andrei Svechnikov would win the award, he wasn’t a nominee in the end. Pettersson came out of the gate swinging for the Canucks and will carry the team for a long time.
Art Ross : Nikita Kucherov
Lady Byng Memorial Trophies: Aleksander Barkov
Up next in the NHL Awards Ceremony is the Art Ross Trophy winning Nikita Kucherov of the Tampa Bay Lightning. After that is the Fantasy awards given by FanDuel. Also awarded was the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. The winner? Aleksander Barkov, who’s ability to stay out of the box and stay disciplined earned him the prestigious award.
NHL GM of the year: Don Sweeney
After that in the NHL Awards Ceremony is the NHL GM of the year award. Carolina Hurricanes GM Don Waddell is one of the finalists along with Doug Armstrong of the Blues and Don Sweeney of the Bruins.
Unfortunately it was ultimately the wrong Don who won it. Don Sweeney is the GM who would walk away from tonight’s festivities with something nice to put on his mantle. But the fact that Waddell was in the conversation with the two GMs that were in the Cup Finals says alot about his ability to keep creating an excellent Carolina Hurricanes team.
King Clancy Memorial Trophy: Jason Zucker
Probably my favorite off-ice trophy. The King Clancy Memorial Trophy is given to the player who best exemplifies leadership qualities on and off the ice and who has made a significant humanitarian contribution to his community. It comes with a $40K charity to their foundation.
Jason Zucker, of the Minnesota Wild, who has been linked to possibly being part of a trade to Carolina Hurricanes was crowned the winner of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy this NHL award Ceremony.
Ted Lindsay Award: Nikita Kucherov
This year we lost a legend. Ted Lindsay was a man who has left his mark on the NHL in more ways than one. A top 100 player in the history of the league, he was the man who created the NHLPA that has pioneered safety for all our favorite players. The award is voted on by the players of the league.
This year the winner of the award is Nikita Kucherov for his second award of the night. This has to be a special night for him as his playoff run was cut short when everyone thought he would lead the Tampa Bay Lightning to another Stanley Cup. Perhaps won’t be the last award he wins tonight.
Norris Trophy: Mark Giordano
Goes to the best defender in the league, the Norris Trophy has somehow avoided the Carolina Hurricanes even with the defensive talent that the team sports. This year is no different with yet no Hurricanes nominated in the NHL Awards Ceremony once again.
Taking it home this year is 35 year old Mark Giordano of the Calgary Flames. Can’t say that a little help from former Carolina Hurricane, Noah Hanifin didn’t help. He is the first Calgary Flame to receive the award. So at least there is a little parity. Perhaps next year Jaccob Slavin will finally be in the conversation.
Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy: Robin Lehner
Named after the only NHL player to lose his life due to injuries sustained while in play, the Bill Masterton Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player who best exemplifies the qualities of perseverance, sportsmanship, and dedication to the sport of hockey.
This NHL Awards Ceremony it has been awarded to Robin Lehner, who was given new life and a second chance with the New York Islanders. He took those and ran with it this season taking the Islanders all the way to the second round of the playoffs where the magical run was cut short by the Carolina Hurricanes.
Lehner who was diagnosed with a mental illness has taken charge of his situation and championed all those who have suffered similarly. He has been very inspiring in this league and has been more role model than most players will ever be.
Frank J. Selke Trophy: Ryan O’Reilly
The Selke Trophy is awarded annually to the best defensive forward in the league. This NHL Awards Ceremony it will go to a man who already got some hardware at the end of the Playoffs, Ryan O’Reilly. The Sabres must be hating themselves for letting this man go.
What a week for this man. He will be a Blues player for a long time. He didn’t waste any time giving props to his teammates and was extremely humble in accepting the second award in a single span of seven days. Well deserved.
Jack Adams: Barry Trotz
The Jack Adams belongs to the best coach in the NHL. There is no question in our minds that Rod Brind’amour, who ended a nine year playoff drought in his first year as the coach of the Carolina Hurricanes was snubbed for nomination for the Jack Adams.
So it’s no surprise that the next best coach, Barry Trotz would be the one to take that hardware home tonight. Barry Trotz took another team that seemed destined to miss the playoffs at the beginning of the season all the way to the second round where Rod Brind’amour’s Carolina Hurricanes ended their season.
Vezina Trophy: Andrei Vasilevskiy
The best goalie in the league. It doesn’t get both simpler or more complicated than that. Goalies are fickle creatures and this award is exactly that. This NHL Awards Ceremony, the Trophy belongs to Andrei Vasilevskiy of the Tampa Bay Lightning.
He did everything for this team but win them playoff games. But you can’t do everything. But he did help the team tie the record for most points in an NHL season. Which is a hard thing to do with 30 other teams of excellent players to compete against. Well deserved.
Robin Lehner, and Thomas Greiss are the winners of the other Goalie award, The William M. Jennings Trophy for being the duo that has allowed the least goals this season.
Mark Messier Leadership Award: Wayne Simmonds
The Award Caniacs have been waiting to be awarded all night. The Captain Justin Williams is one of the three nominees for the award that is given to the player who is identified as a superior leader within their sport, and as a contributing member of society. As the man who created the Storm Surge and put the Carolina Hurricanes back on the map, he is more than deserving.
The namesake of the award himself came out to present the award. This NHL Awards Ceremony the winner is… Drum roll please…. Wayne Simmonds. That was very unfortunate for Caniacs who don’t seem happy with the results. Naturally. Perhaps next season Williams will be recognized for all that he has brought to the team he leads.
The Hart Memorial Trophy: Nikita Kucherov
The Hart Trophy. The Cream of the Crop. The most valuable player in the National Hockey League. This is the award given to the best of the best. It’s been won by guys like Gordie Howe and Wayne Gretzky. It’s not an award to be taken lightly. It’s the last award in this year’s NHL Awards Ceremony.
This year it goes to Nikita Kucherov for his efforts with the Tampa Bay Lightning. And before people get upset about it going to the best player of a team that got swept in the first round, the other nominees either also got swept in the first round or never made it there.
Just like his award winning goalie teammate, he helped put his team in the history books as tied with the league record for points in the season. He has also put up more points than anyone else in the league and tied for 6th overall in goals. Without him, the Tampa Bay Lightning never make the historic run that they do. Well deserved.
Question for CC Readers: Who was more snubbed for the award they were nominated for? Don Waddell and the NHL GM of the Year Award or Justin Williams and the Mark Messier Leadership Award?
