Charlotte Checkers: ONE Win Away from First Calder Cup
The Charlotte Checkers come back in Game 4 to win 5-3 to take a 3-1 series lead in the Calder Cup Finals. This is the second time in a row that the Checkers have won in Chicago on this road trip.
The Chicago Wolves have been victimized to what they were the perpetrators of in Game one and almost in game two, a comeback loss. The Wolves had a solid 3-1 lead, giving a good amount of Checkers fans to believe the game was over, but it wasn’t.
The Checkers have taken a 3-1 series lead, taking two solid games on the road in Chicago. The Wolves have gotten themselves in a slump, as the Checkers have won the last three games in a row. Now the Checkers stand on the cusp of winning their first Calder Cup in Franchise History. No matter what happens in game 5 Caniacs and Checkers fans everywhere will be happy this weekend.
In Game 4, the Checkers started off poorly with the Wolves scoring first with Nic Hague. Jesper Sellgren would tie it up at 1-1, but Zac Leslie would give the Wolves the lead again. The Wolves led in shots 10-5.
After lots of work to try to get this game back tied, Brooks Macek scores for the Wolves to add insurance on to their lead, leading 3-1. On their third powerplay of the game, the Checkers cut the deficit down to one with Martin Necas getting an emphatic goal.
The Checkers would just jump right off the gun and get the game tied early in the third period. Nicolas Roy from a nice feed from Julien Gauthier. From this point, the Checkers are just rolling on momentum and can’t be stopped. Aleksi Saarela with an excellent shot would give the Checkers their first lead of the game and the game-winning goal. Roy again, with the dagger to take Game 4.
The Charlotte Checkers have been amazing on the powerplay, scoring on it on three out of the four games in this series. Their aggressive penalty-kill has the Wolves on edge, to prevent more shorthanded goals, that the Checkers have shown ability in. The Checkers are red hot right now and stand only one win away from the first ever precious Calder Cup in Charlotte, North Carolina.
They’ll need to win Game 5 on Saturday to win it in Chicago or they can win it in Game 6 or 7 in Charlotte, with home games (we wouldn’t mind) in front of their fans with the Cup. The Checkers don’t show any hints of slowing down, so it’s safe to expect them to take the Calder Cup in Chicago. Game 5 will be on Saturday, June 8th, at 08:00 P.M. Eastern Time.
