4. Inability to beat Metro rivals

A large amount of the frustration with Peters is his inability to lead his team past divisional opponents. Facing the Jackets on Dec. 16 will be telling as to where the Canes are at this point. Columbus is the points leader in the Metro.

The Canes have lost four of their last five games against Metro opposition. Two games that stick out are the losses to the New York Rangers over the past few weeks. One of those losses was at home and the other at Madison Square Garden.

Moreover, those defeats for the Canes at the hands of the Rangers came by a combined 11-2 margin. Scott Darling did not perform well on either occasion and the entire team did not look prepared to take on a quality foe.

Carolina needs to start taking down teams like the Washington Capitals, New York Islanders, Rangers, Blue Jackets, and Penguins to make that climb to playoff contention. That’s something the Canes have not been able to do under Peters.
