Carolina Hurricanes find their stride against tired Red Wings

After last night’s game and emotional ending both the Detroit Red Wings and Carolina Hurricanes look forward to a normal back to back battle.  With Eddie Lack doing better and sitting this game out with a strained neck (and spiffy suit). Carolina changed gears to a must win mindset given the missed opportunity last night to pick up a much valued extra point.

The Game

Hurricanes came out in game 2 with surprising very little energy.  Detroit carried the play early, and seemed to keep the game tight within the circles.  Cam Ward started this game very focused and held down the fort.  Even with all the Canes struggles in the 1st the Hurricanes Lee Stempniak comes through with the first goal.

That goal by Carolina seemed to really effect the Red Wings.  At that point, the Hurricanes start to control the action and play in their end.  Didn’t take much longer for Joakim Nordstrom to find the net.

The second period starts out with Carolina taking control of play and the Red Wings not being able to really get any offense going.  With the Hurricanes dominating the offensive one, Jordan Staal

The Canes came out in the 3rd with the chance to give Cam Ward a shutout.  After only 10 shots on goal through two periods, Detroit finds some energy midway through the 3rd.  Once again the Hurricanes give a new up and comer his first goal in the NHL, when Thomas Nosek gets Detroit on the board.

Down the Stretch

With that goal the Red Wings wake up and gain some momentum. As the Wings start pressing Robbie Russo interferes with Derek Ryan and Canes go on the power play.  Hurricanes control the zone and look very good when Elias Lindholm finds the net off a Sebastian Aho rebound to make it 4-1.

It is Final

The Carolina Hurricanes came into this game needing a big win.  The Detroit Red Wings started the game with a big effort but playing three game in three day became too much.  The Wings just didn’t have anything in the tank to make this much of a game.  The heart and effort were there but the energy level wasn’t.

Next: Staal Key to Making Playoffs

Carolina did what needed to be done to keep their playoff hopes alive.  It was a great effort from all of the Hurricane players.  In the end, Carolina put the final dagger into the Detroit Red Wings 25 years of making the playoffs with eliminating the Red Wings on this night.

As a born and raised Detroit fan and devoted Caniac, who call the Hurricanes my home team this was a bittersweat night.  But being with all my friends in Section 312 made it a night to remember.
